Support from the city of Laredo in residential area
Just north of downtown Laredo, the neighborhood of El Trece is primarily residential with a spattering of businesses and public services throughout. “The city has invested pretty aggressively in public access,” says Joe Baeza, who has lived in Laredo most of his adult life and is an investigator and public information officer for the city of Laredo. El Trece is just east of the La Ladrillera Recreation Center and is home to the Bruni Plaza Public Library, Christopher M. Macdonell Elementary School and Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. The public spaces within El Trece are outnumbered by the residential spaces, but don’t have the squeezed feeling of a downtown district. “The market isn’t flooding with housing,” says Baeza. “And it is pretty affordable.”
Mixture of single and multi-family properties
El Trece has a mixture of carports, garages and on-street parking for vehicles. The neighborhood has sidewalks, but they can vary in size and sometimes disappear as sidewalks transform into carports or curbs. Most of the neighborhood is built out, but there can be a few lots for sale in the 60,000s. El Trece is a combination of single-family and multi-family dwellings, with most of the housing styles consisting of Spanish and bungalows. The streets of the neighborhood can occasionally feel crowded with single-family homes sitting close together with large front porches. These homes can begin around $120,000 to $240,000. Multi-family properties can consist of a single building with multiple units or a property with multiple buildings, ranging from $140,000 to $375,000. Some homes may have backyard pools, and there are mature trees through the streets and backyards.
Local stores within the neighborhood
San Bernardo Avenue has multiple local businesses like Narvaez Flowers & Gift Shop, Laredo Auto Paint & Supply and Lira’s Restaurant. Along Santa Maria Avenue, a Family Dollar and Tortilleria La Fe sell everyday items and groceries. Half a mile south on Santa Maria Avenue, the Outlet Shoppes at Laredo has over 50 clothing stores. An H-E-B for groceries is about 2 miles east.
Library events for children and city-wide event in February
Through June and July, the Bruni Plaza Branch Library has Tuesday board games and Wednesday STEM activities for preteens. The largest Laredo-run event is the Washington Birthday Celebration, a month-long celebration that includes a Jalapeño Festival. Contestants must eat as many jalapeños in 15 minutes as possible. “It’s a painful experience to watch,” says Baeza. “The looks on their faces say it all when they finish.”
Magnet school for health sciences with college credit
Students begin at Christopher M. Macdonell Elementary, rated a C on Niche, before attending Louis J. Christen Middle School, with a C-minus on Niche. Raymond and Tirza Martin High School receives a B-minus and contains the Dr. Dennis D. Cantu Health Science Magnet School. Students can take Advanced Placement courses and earn college credits from the magnet school to receive an Associate of Science degree upon graduation. Both the middle and high school are just across Park Street to the north of El Trece.
Plaza shade and nearby senior center
Bruni Plaza sits in front of the Bruni Plaza Branch Library, with a paved path leading through a cluster of mature trees. Across the railroad tracks to the west, the San Ignacio Soccer Field and the Jose Ortiz-Elida Valdez Park are about a block apart from each other. Within the park, the La Ladrillera Recreation Center is a senior center where membership is free for those 60 and older. Outside, a playground and a shaded basketball court look out over a grassy field.
Four bus lines and access to Interstate 35
There are four bus routes along the parallel lines of El Trece. These buses are run by the El Metro Transit system, whose headquarters are just south of El Trece. Interstate 35 acts as the eastern border for the neighborhood. The Laredo International Airport is 6 miles northeast. While not a commercial railroad, the Union Pacific Railroad has tracks to the west of the neighborhood, leading to Mexico and then through the western United State.
