Residential neighborhood with multiple schools around
Just east of the Zacate Creek, El Trompe is largely a residential neighborhood laid out in a grid system like the majority of the city. “The community is very family-orientated,” says Joe Baeza, an investigator and public information officer for the city of Laredo. “It’s a pretty easy-go-lucky community where you can still go out at 10 p.m.” El Trompe is only about a mile and a half from downtown and its plethora of shopping. The residential area is supported by multiple schools around the neighborhood with Memorial Middle School sitting in the middle of El Trompe. “Good schools are a big deal,” says Baeza. “It’s bragging rights for a lot of neighborhoods.”

Ranch-style and Spanish-style sitting close together
Single-story homes dominate the area, with a mixture of single-family and multi-family homes. “The market isn’t flooded with housing,” says Baeza. “Closer to the middle of the city you’ll get older homes.” Most of the homes within El Trompe were built between 1940 and 1980. Common house styles include ranch-style and Spanish, with prices for single-family homes commonly ranging between $120,000 and $245,000. Properties may have fences, and there are scatterings of trees throughout providing shade from the Texas heat. Multi-family properties may consist of multiple buildings on a single lot, with prices beginning around $60,000 and reaching up to $450,000. The neighborhood has scatterings of trees providing shade, but they don’t line the streets. Sidewalks aren’t consistent throughout the neighborhood; some streets may have smaller ones just off the road while others may not have any.

Along West Lyon Street, Prontos Meat Market and Lilys Food Stand are separated by a single residential property. Following West Lyon and on the edge of the neighborhood sits Elisa’s Kitchen and Orlando’s Snacks, smaller establishments that sell tacos, nachos and nieva de fruta, a fruit-based cold treat. La Michoacana Meat Market first opened in 1986 in Houston and sells fresh produce and home-cooked meals in addition to marinated meats. Next door is a Family Dollar, while across the street is Elotes Fuego Snack, selling smoothies and tostadas. The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo, with over 50 stores, is about 2 miles west in downtown Laredo.

Parades with food vendors and an airshow
The Washington Birthday Celebration happens throughout the month of February. “There are carnivals and festivals throughout,” says Baeza. “The endcap is the two parades.” The parades have food vendors along the route. The celebration also includes an air show at the Laredo International Airport.
Multiple elementary schools with CTE classes at the high school
Students are zoned to the Laredo Independent School District. The neighborhood is divided between multiple schools within the district, with some students beginning at Don Jose Gallego Elementary, which receives a C from Niche, for kindergarten through fifth grade. Memorial Middle School earns a C and sits in the middle of the neighborhood. J.W. Nixon High School offers Career and Technical Education courses and is home to the Business Industry and Public Services Early College Academy, with classes in cosmetology and welding. Nixon High receives a B-minus from Niche.

Two skateparks and splash pads with connecting path
There are two parks in opposite corners, Seven Flags Park and Dr. Cecilia May Moreno Park, with virtually identical offerings, including skateparks and a splash pad. Parks in Laredo tend to have more trees and shading over playgrounds and basketball courts. Seven Flags Park is also dog-friendly and has barbeque spots throughout. The two parks are connected by a path, although at times this path can be smaller and a bit overgrown, with sections that are closer to the Zacate Creek with the possibility for flooding. Dr. Cecilia May Moreno Park has an outdoor exercise section.
Four bus routes with one leading to the airport
The bus routes 4 and 6 run by El Metro Transit follow Springfield and Cedar Avenue, respectively. Gustavus Street bisects the neighborhood and has two routes along the street. Route 11 leads to the Laredo International Airport 5 miles away, with route 13 leading further east near Lake Casa Blanca.
