Much of La X is dedicated to the Zacate Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility and a sparse warehouse district split by a freight route. While the constant chugging of passing trains may cause frustration, the neighborhood offers some of the lowest housing costs in the city when compared to nearby Las Lomas and Chacon. The northern half of La X is served by multiple schools, including an elementary and middle school. La X is less than 1 mile from all the shopping downtown and is home to a few Laredo staples, including Glass Kitchen. Its location along the Mexico border not only places the city in the path of Monarch Butterflies migrating south but also means the Rio Grande River and the Puente Internacional Numero ll Juarez-Lincoln Nuevo Laredo checkpoint aren't far away.

Small homes in one of Laredo's oldest neighborhoods
Chain-link fences line the edges of properties and the neighborhood's narrow and inconsistent sidewalks. The area predominantly has single-story homes, which are comprised of single-family and multi-family homes. Ana Reyna Arzate, Marketing Coordinator for the Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau and 20-year resident of Laredo, says that neighborhoods east of Interstate 35, which includes La X, are some of the oldest in the city. Residences were built between 1950 and 1980, and most need repairs and modern renovations. Despite many properties having carports, street parking is relatively common. Interested homebuyers and investors can expect prices between $115,000 and $160,000. There are also a few multi-family options, consisting of duplexes or several apartment buildings on one shared lot. Often, these are priced between $200,000 and $250,000.

Events that keep visitors flocking to Laredo
The city organizes many free annual events, including the Laredo Birding Festival, a yearly tradition held every February. Various colorful birds fly over Laredo in warmer months, as the city is a significant part of the migration corridor. The Laredo International Sister Cities Festival is held every July and takes over the Sames Auto Arena. The Mercado hosts artisans from all over Mexico, specializing in hand-made jewelry, clothing, and other goods. Arzate says the festival has been celebrated for 20 years and attracts over 20,000 attendees in the span of three days. Arguably, Laredo's most prominent event is the George Washington Birthday Celebration. "We are a part of the United States, and we are proud of it," Arzate says. "We want to have a way to celebrate that here." The 100-year tradition features several events, a jalapeno festival and a carnival over the course of a month.
Getting in and around La X
Public transportation is provided by El Metro Transit, with bus stops lining every other street in and around La X. Route 11 leads to the highly rated Laredo Medical Center and Laredo International Airport 5 miles away, with Route 13 leading farther east near Lake Casa Blanca International State Park. Interstate 35 is directly west, allowing convenient access to the rest of the region, including the Puente Internacional Numero ll Juarez-Lincoln Nuevo Laredo checkpoint to enter Mexico.
Renovations to Zacate Creek
The 10-mile stretch of Zacate Creek extends to the Rio Grande and includes Seven Flags, Azteca Parks and other small outdoor recreation spots. Seven Flags Park is dog-friendly, with trees shading the playgrounds and picnic tables. Parks are connected by small paths, often overgrown. The City of Laredo, in partnership with the Outdoor Recreation Partnership Program, has pledged over $7 million to improve the linear park. "It's hard to get to at the moment," Arzate says. "They'll be making it more accessible. Right now you have to go to specific streets to get in." The project aims to restore the amphitheater, forge new walking trails and create a visitor center with rentable kayaks and bikes, mimicking the outdoor recreation at Lake Casa Blanca International State Park near Laredo International Airport.
