Residential streets near the Memorial Gardens of Laredo and many mom-and-pop shops
Although the Memorial Gardens of Laredo is Las Polkas' most notable feature, its surrounding residential streets are still very much alive. Mom-and-pop shops seem to be on every corner, but proximity to Interstate 35 allows locals access to all the diverse dining, shopping and attractions this small border city offers. Las Polkas sits between East Saunders Street and Clark Boulevard and is framed by small mercados, local restaurants and food trucks that belong to the San Bernardo district. Its location along the Mexico border places the city in the path of Monarch Butterflies migrating south. It also means the Rio Grande River and the Puente Internacional Numero ll Juarez-Lincoln Nuevo Laredo checkpoint aren't far away.

The facility offers a modest gymnasium with a basketball court and weight machines. The City of Laredo, in partnership with the Outdoor Recreation Partnership Program, has pledged over $7 million to improve Zacate Creek. The 10-mile stretch of green space extends to the Rio Grande and includes several small parks and a skate park. Most residents are renters of older, established homes
Las Polkas' narrow streets are laid out in a grid patter. The homes, built predominantly between 1955 and 1995, are mission- and ranch-style. "Las Polkas is one of the oldest parts of the whole city," Arzate says. "There are a lot of older homes, and most people in that area are renting." One-story, single-family dwellings often provide three to four bedrooms and are under 2,000 square feet. Some have been recently renovated, while others may need repairs and upgrades. Porches, patios and cabanas are common, along with wrought-iron security bars and front lawns framed by chain link or iron fences. Interested homebuyers can expect prices between $180,000 and $250,000. There are also several multifamily residences, such as apartment buildings and multiple homes that share one lot. Those can cost upward of $500,000 to $600,000.

The Laredo International Sister Cities Festival is held every July and takes over the Sames Auto Arena. The event hosts artisans from all over Mexico who specialize in hand-made jewelry, clothing, and other goods. It's a festival celebrated for 20 years, Arzate says. "Within those three days, we see about 20,000 people attending." Arguably, Laredo's most prominent event is the George Washington Birthday Celebration. "We are a part of the United States, and we are proud of it," Arzate says. We want to have a way to celebrate that in Laredo." The 100-year tradition features various events, a jalapeno festival and a carnival over the course of a month.
