Warehouses hiding a smaller residential section

With the Rio Grande as the western neighbor and a large warehouse district occupying the eastern corner, Seven Lights is a small residential area. Most of the neighborhood is made up of warehouses where drivers deposit loads after crossing the Mexican-United States border. Some companies allow overnight parking, but not all do, so roads around the warehouses may have long-haul trucks parked along the sides. “There are a lot of warehouse spaces,” says Joe Baeza, an investigator and public information officer for the City of Laredo. “There’s a lot of trade industry in the community because it’s our main cash crop if you will.” Two railroad tracks head north-south through the neighborhood, and Interstate 35 is just a mile east with direct access to the border crossing 3 miles south. “There’s a daily allowance of motor vehicle traffic,” says Baeza. “Anything you’ve worn or consumed has probably come through Laredo.” The Francisco Farias Elementary School, part of the Laredo Independent School District, sits in the southeastern corner of Seven Lights.

Ranch-style homes with grid planning

Homes sit close together with privacy fences enclosing the property. Properties tend to be small and mainly ranch-style with prices ranging from $130,000 to $155,000. Homes don’t come onto the market often, with most of the neighborhood consisting of starter homes. There are a few newer residences ranging in price from $150,000 to $220,000 but these are very rare. Multifamily units are also present, with two to four residences being the most common. Trees are scattered throughout the neighborhood, and sidewalks appear sporadically on streets. Some streets have larger sidewalks flush with the roads, while other times it is a smaller path set back from the road.

Chain and local businesses on San Bernardo

While a decent amount of the neighborhood is dedicated to warehouses, the only store within the boundaries is Carmen’s Flower Shop which operates mainly as an online store. Along San Bernardo Avenue are a variety of chain businesses, including Sam’s Club, Burlington and WSS, a shoe store. There are a few local businesses as well, such as Texas Thrift Store and Mike’s Western Wear. The nearby restaurants are primarily local Mexican restaurants, including Danny’s, Taco Palenque San Bernardo and La Unica de Nuevo Laredo. Further north on San Bernardo Avenue, the Kettle Pancake House serves breakfast all day.

After school activities within the neighborhood

Just north of Farias Elementary and the Marcos Aranda Recreation and Boxing Gym, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Laredo – the Northwest Club has a game room and arts and crafts activities for children. The club also has a gym for intramural sports and a music room. The Sames Auto Arena, six miles east, has concerts and performances throughout the year.

Split between two school districts

Seven Lights is divided between the United Independent School District (UISD) and Laredo Independent School District (LISD), with homes north heading to UISD and homes south to LISD. Within the LISD, students begin at Farias Elementary, which receives a B from Niche before attending Christen Middle School, with a C-minus. Raymond and Tirza Martin High School earns a B-minus. In UISD, students begin at Clark Elementary, with a C-plus, before moving to Clark Middle, with a B-minus. Alexander High School receives an A-minus and is rated the 3rd best high school in Laredo.

Boxing gym, dog park and basketball by the river

The Marcos Arnada Recreation and Boxing Gym has different indoor classes including Zumba, taekwondo and both youth and adult boxing. Outdoors, K9 Kimmie’s Corner Dog Park opened in 2022 and sits behind the soccer field. South of the neighborhood is the Lafayette Skatepark. The Canizales and Lafayette Street Park are just across the road from each other. Los Martinez Park consists only of a basketball court at the moment, but the city is working to expand the park to provide a park within walking distance of the neighborhood.

Buses throughout with interstate to the east

There are two buses run by El Metro Transit that run through the neighborhood, Route 15 weaves along the streets with Route 1 following the eastern border of Seven Lights. Interstate 35 is a mile east, and vehicles will have to go around a block of shopping for access. The Laredo International Airport is 6 miles east.
