Close to multiple shopping and dining districts
Sitting adjacent to Interstate 35 and the Zacate Creek, Siete Viejo is just a mile from downtown. Covering 14 blocks north to south, Siete Viejo is filled with single-family homes laid out in a grid pattern, as is common with neighborhoods closer to downtown Laredo. “We are rapidly growing into a big city, but we still have a small city’s friendliness,” says Maria Calderón-Porter, a long-time resident of Laredo. Across Interstate 35 on San Bernardo Avenue are local restaurants and stores, and while chain businesses do exist in the city, they tend to be in the north section of the town. The Laredo Medical Center is to the northeast, along the way to the Laredo International Airport.
Ranch homes with a little shade
The area is mostly ranch homes built in the 1960s, although a couple of Spanish Colonials are scattered throughout. Prices range between $98,000 and $220,000. There are few trees throughout the neighborhood, although properties may have one or two in the backyard for some shade. Most homes have carports or a short, uncovered carport, but a few homes have garages. There is no designated street parking, but cars may be parked on the street in front of homes. Sidewalks are rare in the neighborhood with most homes sitting closer to the street. On the south edge of the neighborhood, the Housing Authority of the City of Laredo runs 272 single-family units in the Colonia Guadalupe development, with homes ranging from one to four bedrooms.
Vehicle businesses and local restaurants
The neighborhood has a few local businesses, mainly car-related along Interstate 35. “There are lots of dealerships; you can get your car as soon as you want it,” says Calderón-Porter. “There are some really good services here.” La Dulceria is a candy store on the north edge of Siete Viejo, while across Park Street on the southern edge sits Los Perez Meat Market. West of Interstate 35 are several local restaurants, including Clementine’s Kitchen and Sal’s Pizza. The Texas-based grocery store H-E-B is to the southeast.
Arena transforming into a theater
The Sames Auto Arena, six miles northeast, hosts concerts, comedy shows and even boxing fights throughout the year. “The arena will turn into a theater for shows,” says Calderón-Porter. The Laredo Washington Birthday Celebration occurs yearly during the month of February and includes parades, an airshow and a jalapeño competition.
Health Science magnet school next to Martin High School
Students attend Bruni Elementary School for kindergarten through fifth grade before attending Christen Middle School. Bruni Elementary School receives a C from Niche with Christen Middle receiving a C-minus. Raymond & Tirza Martin High School earns a B-minus and offers over 30 sports and clubs to students. The Dr. Dennis D. Cantu Health and Science Magnet School is located on the same campus as Martin High School but is a separate school focusing on health science courses such as pharmacology and anatomy.
Several parks and baseball fields throughout
Eliseo Valdez Junior Park has a covered basketball court and playground next to the Jose “Pepe” Moreno Field. In the southeastern corner, Zacate Creek Linear Park sits along the Zacate Creek and has several sport facilities such as soccer fields. There are also two playgrounds, one of which is covered, and a trail following the creek. “Outdoor events in the summer are pool-related,” says Calderón-Porter. “The city owns eight pools.” The Inner City Park is two blocks east of the neighborhood and has a pool and the Lamar Bruni Vergara Inner City Branch Library.
Interstate border and one bus through
Interstate 35 is the western border, stretching north-south across the United States. The El Metro Transit system has one bus through the neighborhood, Route 3 which travels north-south along San Francisco Avenue. The Laredo International Airport is a little more than 5 miles northeast.
