A diverse array of housing in central Largo

The Palm Hill area of central Largo is an eclectic mix of apartment complexes, single-family homes and age-restricted communities close to the city’s growing downtown business district. Homebuyers are drawn to the neighborhood as much for the variety of housing as for the proximity to shopping, dining and entertainment on Bay Drive. “It’s an up-and-coming area. The city has really been working on their little downtown, and it’s quite a delightful place, with lots of businesses and restaurants and parks,” says Pamela Ryan Anderson, who owns Ryan Realty and has over 30 years of local real estate experience.

A mix of age-restricted communities, apartments, single-family homes

Contemporary and ranch-style homes line the streets on the neighborhood’s north side. Modern row houses in the Skyview Townhomes development have an HOA, unlike most of the standalone single-family homes north of Eighth Avenue. The gated, 55-plus Palm Hill Country Club community is south of Eighth Avenue, next to apartment complexes like Canterbury Villas and Brittany Bay. The Barrington, an assisted- and independent-living apartment complex, is also on the neighborhood’s south side.

The median sale price is just over $150,000, below the city median of $350,000. Townhomes and single-family homes typically sell for between $270,000 and $950,000, while the manufactured homes in Palm Hill Country Club cap out around $250,000. Palm Hill is less vulnerable to flooding than other parts of Largo, but wind damage is a concern during hurricane season.

Palm Hill Country Club amenities and Largo Central Park nearby

Largo Central Park is an almost 30-acre public park to the north, home to the Central Park Performing Arts Center, Largo Public Library and outdoor recreational amenities. Largo Central Railroad runs through the park, open for rides once a month. “It’s a very active park, and at Christmas, it’s stunning the way they light it up. People come from far and near to see it,” Anderson says. Bayhead Action Park, across Seminole Boulevard, has a skate park, lighted volleyball and basketball courts and a short trail, among other athletic amenities. Private amenities in the Palm Hill Country Club community include clubhouses, swimming pools, a golf course and more.

Downtown Largo shopping and dining on Bay Drive

Strip malls with national chains and small retailers line the Bay Drive commercial corridor, Largo’s growing central business district. There’s a Publix in the Pinellas Shopping Center, close to a Walgreens, Chase Bank and Gam-O-Storus, a novelties and games shop. “They also have a very new Ace Hardware, which is phenomenal. They’re really putting in nice retailers to spruce up the area,” Anderson says. For sit-down dining, there’s Sages Bistro, a homestyle Italian eatery, and Benedict’s, a classic breakfast and lunch diner.
