Arts District: The creative hub of Downtown Las Vegas
Attracting a melting pot of creatives, culinary crusaders and adventure-seekers alike, the eclectic Arts District in the heart of Las Vegas is a unique blend of vibrant community spirit and artistic expression. Canvased by colorful murals, sculptures and quirky signs, living in this 18-block culture hub provides an unparalleled experience that will surely leave anyone feeling inspired and captivated for the long term. From contemporary art installations to avant-garde performances and pop-ups, there’s something new to discover around every corner. And its food, housing and nightlife scenes are just as bright and diverse as the art scene that defines it. “The Arts District itself has festooned lighting and all these bars and pubs one after the other, so it’s blowing up like SoHo in New York City,” says Paul McGuire, Chief Marketing Officer for the Fremont Street Experience and Downtown Las Vegas resident. Fremont Street Experience is a company promoting the downtown area. “It's becoming hip and trendy with amazing restaurants and individual proprietors, and you have retro store after retro store for blocks.”
18 blocks of art and culture
The Arts District, also known as 18b, offers an irresistible mix of restaurants and breweries. Esther’s Kitchen fired up the district’s dining reputation as one of the first. The Italian spot is known for its housemade pastas, pizzas and bread served with anchovy butter. “It’s difficult to get a reservation, but it’s packed all the time,” says McGuire. “They’re opening a location right next door because of the demand.” Emphasizing Latin culture and food, Makers and Finders draws on the owners’ Colombian roots and has been a mainstay in the Arts District since 2014. The earthy Vesta Coffee Roasters is a friendly spot to grab a breakfast sandwich and a latte. And grab a slice of any style, from Brooklyn to Detroit to Sicilian, at Good Pie. The district is also known for its breweries. SerVehZah’s taproom offers 24 draft selections, and Able Baker Brewing is known for its creative brews, high-energy vibe and roll-up garage doors. Sip cocktails with innovative ingredients like duck fat-washed rye and pink peppercorn-infused tequila in vintage furniture on a pink patio at the Velveteen Rabbit. Or grab a drink at Artifice Bar, the longest-running bar and lounge in the district, which encompasses three rooms with different music genres and unique events like Scarlet Deepest Red Gothic Night.
The district’s creative center, Arts Factory is a converted warehouse featuring more than 30 artists and galleries representing a range of styles and media. Snag a small piece of curated art out of their vending machine for $10 to $20. Head next door to Art Square, home to additional artists, the Vegas Theatre Company, an art garden and DTLV Arts, the collective spearheading events and the driving force behind the arts scene. For an immersive art experience, step into the surreal space at "Particle Ink: Speed of Dark,” which lures attendees into a warehouse filled with laser-light shows, augmented reality displays and other performances based on the elements of surprise and discovery.
New homeowners can decorate their lawns with bizarre and unique pieces from Artistic Iron Works, which offers everything from quaint garden decorations to a giant dinosaur and alien spaceship. The district is also the go-to spot for relics of the past, like Red Kat Vintage, a vintage clothing shop, and Antique Alley Mall, which boasts 65 stalls of bargain shopping treasures. Of course, there are the unique places, too, like Cockroach Theater, known for its thought-provoking shows. And Nightmare Toys is an oddity shop filled with horrifying objects, movies, creepy masks and more for the morbidly curious. “There’s comedy, live theater and murals throughout the area,” says McGuire. “All of these creative entrepreneurs are popping up everywhere.”
Anchored by Alberton’s, CVS, Dollar Tree and other retail, the 36-store Charleston Plaza is easily accessible at the corner of Burnham Avenue and Charleston Boulevard. Las Vegas North Premium Outlets is a destination for clothing and home goods with over 180 stores.
Luxury high-rise condos with city skyline views
While the market is competitive, and there aren’t endless options up for sale at one time, the district makes up for that with luxury high-rise condos with lavish amenities that are within walking distance of all the action. Most properties were built in the early 2000s and range from $335,000 for a one-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot space to nearly $3 million for a three-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot penthouse. Condos come with parking and excellent security. Newport Lofts touts minimalist style, and amenities in the 23-story building include a rooftop pool and movie theater, affording spectacular views of the valley and mountains. Lofts are 900 to 1,600 square feet, and two-story penthouses are up to 2,700 square feet. A one-bedroom unit starts at about $360,000. At Soho Lofts, high ceilings, cement floors and a lack of walls give units an appealing industrial feel. The 16-story building offers granite finishes and jacuzzi tubs in its 112 units. Expect to pay between $425,000 and $615,000 for a one-bedroom condo up to 1,800 square feet.
Year-round events
The Arts District. The biggest is First Fridays, a free community festival featuring local art, music, entertainment, food, and more, which is held on the first Friday of every month. Stroll the streets and engage with more than 100 local artists, grab a bite at any of the 50-plus food trucks or support a street performer. “We have more free live entertainment than any place in the country,” says McGuire.
Excellent extracurriculars in local schools
Clark County School District serves the area, and while there aren’t any schools directly in the neighborhood, public school options are available in nearby communities Huntridge and Downtown Las Vegas. Most local students attend John S. Park Elementary, Roy West Martin Middle School and Rancho High School. The elementary school has a C-plus ranking on Niche, and Roy West has a B-plus. John S. Park has an after-school all-stars program and a family academy. Earning A B on Niche, Rancho offers baseball and swimming teams and a trading card club.
Tough on crime
Crime does tend to be on the higher side, scoring a 7 out of 10 on the CAP Index, a bit higher than the national average of 4. Residents seeking a place of beauty and quiet reflection visit the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden. Located at the corner of Casino Center and Charleston boulevards, the garden was designed, constructed and dedicated in just four days as a memorial to lives forever changed by the October 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting. Entertainers Siegfried and Roy donated the oak tree in the park’s center, named The Tree of Life. Visitors to the garden find a tree-shaded paved walkway with benches leading to a wall of remembrance.
Central to it all
Interstate 15 runs along the western boundary, and Route 159 runs through the neighborhood, providing convenient access to the area. Residents can reach the Strip in 5 miles, Downtown Las Vegas in less than 2 miles and Harry Reid International Airport in 5 miles. The Deuce double-decker bus system runs 24 hours a day, stopping at most resorts in all its blinged-out glory, and the city also operates the Downtown Loop, a free shuttle hitting all the major attractions in the downtown area.
