Paradise in the desert
In the shadow of the foothills of northwest Las Vegas, luxury desert living thrives in Desert Shores. The resort-style master-planned community is surrounded by deep-blue manmade lakes, a sandy beach and towering palms – beckoning outdoor lovers. "It's often overlooked because people are looking at trendy Summerlin next door, but it's a great opportunity to be in that part of town without paying Summerlin prices,” says Kristen Thomas, team lead at The Thomas Group at Real Broker LLC. “Desert Shores is about a third less expensive." Both luxurious and affordable, Desert Shores is only 12 miles from the Vegas Strip and just north of the vibrant Downtown Summerlin. However, its upscale amenities, recreation and scenic views provide everything residents are looking for without having to leave their community.
Desert and lake living impossibly come together in the Las Vegas community of Desert Shores.

Upscale desert living on the lake
Often referred to as a “desert oasis,” residents can live right on the water or on a spacious, lush green lot within walking distance of four lakes, all with the sprawling mountains as a backdrop. Most homes were built between 1988 and 2008 and range from $350,000 to over $2 million, depending on size and proximity to the water. While lavish villas with direct access to the water and private docks can fetch more than $2 million, real estate here is diverse: Properties across the 28 residential subdivisions range from condos and townhomes selling between $200,000 and $400,000 to single-family Spanish-style and contemporary designs starting at $400,000. Due to their age, most properties for sale here have been remodeled or updated with amenities like living room fireplaces and spacious backyards suitable for pools and barbecues. Another benefit of buying an older home is space: "You get vaulted ceilings, wide grand foyers and more separation in the floor plans," Thomas says. As home prices increase, so does curb appeal: think custom driveways, gated 5,000-square-foot properties on nearly 1 acre with private boat dock access and grand pools with grottos and spas.

A haven for hikers and boaters
The focal point of the lavish 682-acre Desert Shores is a quartet of glistening lakes spanning 46 acres, perfect for boating, fishing and sunbathing. The lakes are stocked with catch-and-release fish, so spend summers casting reels or launching a paddle boat from the community docks. Lagoon Beach Park provides residents with a lush outdoor getaway close to home. At its heart is a 400,000-gallon swimming pool built to look like a lagoon. The surrounding sand beach and palm trees feel like an escape to the tropics. Work up a sweat playing volleyball, basketball or horseshoes at the park, or throw a barbecue with friends at the picnic pavilion. The adjacent clubhouse hosts community and special events and can be rented for larger gatherings. "It's an active neighborhood with a great sense of community," Thomas says. "You walk out your front door in the morning and see people jogging and walking their dogs. People are out enjoying the beautiful scenery." Admire the scenery and get regular exercise by hopping on the walking paths in Desert Shores, which wind all through the community. Of course, adventure-seekers who want to experience the outdoors beyond the community limits are only a few miles from the Little Red Rock Nature Preserve, Red Rock Canyon and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.

Central to shopping and dining
Desert Shores offers residents several convenient dining options in its Restaurant Row. Outdoor restaurants and wine bars along Regatta Drive include award-winning French bistro Marche Bacchus. Dine on the lakeside patio and linger over a meal of escargot or braised beef from this favorite brunch and dinner spot. For casual fare, head to Buena Vista Kitchen for breakfast burritos or lunch specials like Taco Tuesdays. Wine lovers will want to join the community’s Vino Vegas Wine and Yacht Club, run by sommeliers that offer members wine tastings and other special events. For nighttime fun, head to the Village Pub & Casino, which offers American fare, video poker and craft beer.
Residents live within minutes of business corridors Lake Mead Boulevard, Rampart Boulevard and Cheyenne Avenue, where they can access various shopping options. "Desert Shores is peaceful, but you're still surrounded by tons of commercial activity," Thomas says. Get groceries and other essentials at Smith’s, Whole Foods, or Target.
