A suburban community in Western Vegas

West Sahara is a byproduct of Western Las Vegas' 21st-century suburbanization. Its huge homes, Red Rock Canyon backdrop and proximity to The Strip and Summerlin attract homebuyers. "What's nice about this area is that you're not technically in Summerlin, but you're still in the heart of a really nice lifestyle," says Realtor Anna Kitras of Fathom Realty. Kitras has sold homes across Las Vegas for over a decade. "You don't really feel like you're in Vegas. It's like a little excursion." And the community's friendly nature is felt along its sidewalk-lined streets. "People are always out and about, walking their dogs or walking to Whole Foods or Orange Theory," Kitras says. "It's very family-oriented."

A mix of large, contemporary homes

Stucco-and-tile is the prevailing style in West Sahara. However, builders Lennar and Blue Heron are changing the landscape with sleek lines and squared rooftops, defining new construction in Pioneer Estates and Prado subdivisions. Most homes here are two-story contemporary colonials, many in private communities. Homes in the Aurora and Westwood subdivisions sit behind gated entrances along sidewalk-lined streets covered with mature palms. On Palmyra Avenue, one-story, 3,000-square-foot homes sit on a half-acre with no homeowner's association fees. Buyers will find many 6,000-square-foot custom estates with gourmet kitchens and media rooms off Silver Meadow Court and condos with pools along South Durango Drive. "Homes here are a little bit older," Kitras says. "Residents have decent-sized lots, and many people have pools." Condos cost between $200,000 and $300,000, while a colonial can cost between $450,000 and $750,000. Many custom estates in West Sahara exceed $1 million and cost as much as $3 million.

Locals enjoy a day at Old Spanish Trail or Desert Breeze

Locals get together at the 10-acre Old Spanish Trail Park. The property sits on a former trade route between California and New Mexico. Walking trails and an Old West-themed playground entice visitors to the park, which also includes educational displays telling the story of the trail's significance to Clark County. Within a mile south is Desert Breeze Park, an outdoor space where many West Sahara athletes practice. The park has four baseball and softball fields in its center and two roller hockey rinks along the edge. Local thrill seekers do some tricks at the skatepark or shoot hoops on the basketball courts.

Many people complain about not having jobs, myself included. I have been unemployed for 3-4 years and since I am going through college I don't have the required experience most of the open jobs require. For example a lot of places are looking for Management Employers. The biggest industries in Las Vegas are the casinos. There are other things but everything is so hard to get into. You need experience to get experience.

I notice that not many people interact. The houses are so close together and neighbors don't even know each others' names. Everyone stays put inside their homes and isolates themselves from others around them.

I used to live in North Carolina, which a completely different atmosphere from here in Las Vegas. People are different, culture is different and even traditions. I think this is a good place to live, but I also think that it's not the best place for children to reside.

There are a lot of jobs for a handful of people but not typically for low class people, more so for the middle and high class.
