Laureldale is a small borough of approximately 4,277 people formed from a section of Muhlenberg Township in 1930. The community is .6 square miles, conveniently close to shops and dining and within walking distance of the Muhlenberg schools. “Many people move here from the city as their next step in home ownership,” says Berkshire Hathaway Realtor Juan Cortes, who owns a home in the Borough. The community has its own police force, fire department, code enforcement, public works and sewer departments. “I love that the local government is so easy to work with,” Cortes says. “Your calls get answered immediately, and everyone is courteous and helpful.”

Students attend Muhlenberg Elementary Center (MEC), the largest elementary school in Berks County. MEC teaches social skills through the High 5 Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the natural environment. The school received a C from Niche. Muhlenberg Junior High School also received a C grade from Niche. Muhlenberg High School has a B from Niche and includes world languages and technology in its curriculum.

Walk to parks
The Laureldale Playground, a ½-mile drive via local roads, features a pavilion, playground equipment and a ball field. In the fall residents can go to the Borough’s annual festival which features music, food, crafts and much more. A walkable park is Dominic Manzella Park which has a playground, a pavilion, and areas for horseshoes, volleyball and quoits. In early summer, the park hosts an event called Sundaes in the Park, where locals can enjoy music, food and ice cream The Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Passenger Railroad, 1.5 miles via back roads, is a popular destination offering visitors scenic train rides using their historic and restored steam engine fleet. The railroad offers unique theme rides throughout the year, including a ride with Santa Claus.

Signature meals and a bar for every taste
The Laureldale area is known for its proximity to retail, from big box stores to mom-and-pop shops. Target and Giant are less than a 2-mile drive via back roads. Hershey Harvest grows and raises signature products without nitrates, fillers or preservatives. A 1-mile drive via local roads, the market offers a variety of fully cooked homemade foods made with their beef, chicken, turkey and pork. There are several favorite watering holes in Laureldale. Margherita Restaurant and Bar has pizza, beer and cocktails. Shirley’s Café and Tequila Bar serves appetizers, salads, wings and their signature dishes. Grumpy’s Bar has a bar, a pool table and live music.

Taking the back roads
The main thoroughfares in the Borough include Kutztown Road and Elizabeth Avenue, which intersect near the center of town. U.S. Route 222 Business is the nearest numbered highway. Though there are several nearby Berks Area Reading Transportation Authority (BARTA) bus stops, most residents rely on their cars. Residents drive approximately 7 miles to get to Reading Regional-Carl A. Spaatz Field Airport via Pennsylvania Route 12.
