Quiet and scenic ‘country living’ along the Kansas River
Scenic Riverway lies in the vicinity of where Kansans say the Civil War truly started. Today, this community bordered by Lecompton and Lawrence is a rural haven consisting of swaths of farmland and dirt roads. “Part of it is river bottomland and the other part of it is very much like the Ozarks. That’s what it reminds me of. It’s very hilly and very scenic because of the trees,” says Paul Bahnmaier, president of the Lecompton Historical Society. Some of the area rests on a bluff that provides views overlooking the Kansas River. Elsewhere, homeowners live amid fields of corn, soybeans and bluegrass and enjoy ample space and privacy provided by numerous multi-care lots. “It’s country living, God’s land,” says resident Loren Funk. “We just have a beautiful view we look at every day. I work in Lawrence, and when I come home, it’s like we’re on a little vacation out in the country, kind of away from people. It’s a beautiful place. The gravel roads are kind of tricky at times, but that’s where we decided to live.”

However, no more than a few new homes per year are built within the community. “I think it’s the way of life we want. We would love to see nice homes built, but we don’t want industry. We don’t want commercial developments. We just want it to keep its rural character,” Funk says.

I-70 give resident's easy access to both Kansas City and Topeka.
Bordered by I-70 commuter route to Kansas City and Topeka
“The interesting thing about where we live is you got Kansas City no more than 25 minutes to the east, and you have Topeka to the west, which is another 25 minutes. So, we’re kind of nestled in the middle of three metropolitan areas, but yet we’re out in the country,” Funk says. Interstate 70 cuts across the Scenic Riverway and provides a commuter route to both Topeka and Kansas City. Travelers who have booked flights also take the interstate to go to the Kansas City International Airport about 50 miles east. Downtown Lawrence is about 8 miles and less than 20 minutes from the heart of Scenic Riverway. The rural area is a similar distance from the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, which provides major medical services for Lawrence and this part of Douglas County.
