Tower Hill owes its name to the High Service Water Tower and Reservoir, a historic red brick monolith that has stood sentry in the Massachusetts neighborhood since 1896 and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Largely residential aside from the winding paths of Bellevue Cemetery on its north side, Tower Hill is situated about 30 miles north of Boston. “Tower Hill is a nice area,” says Jefri Liriano, the principal broker and owner of Liriano Realty. “It’s more residential than anything else. There are a lot of green areas and it’s more for families; you see a lot of people walking outside and walking their dogs.”
Several major roads extend into Tower Hill from Lawrence, many of them blending into the neighborhood landscape and devolving into a network of residential streets. Tower Hill is also bounded to the south by the Merrimack River, and the waterway is complemented by several parks within the neighborhood. “People in Lawrence can put a boat into the Merrimack and go all the way to Lowell,” Liriano says. “When you pass by that area, you will see boats on the water.” Nearby access to Interstate 93 adds convenience for residents to head south to Boston or a few miles north into New Hampshire.
Parks along the Merrimack River provide ample recreation
Close to the High Service Water Tower and Reservoir, the aptly-named Reservoir Park no longer has a body of water within its fenced-off basin, but still serves as a landmark and recreational area. “Reservoir Park is pretty cool, because a lot of people go there to exercise,” Liriano says. “The reservoir is 3 miles if you run around it. You can go there any time of day and there are people jogging.” Bourgoin Park sits on the east side of Tower Hill and has an array of amenities, including a playground and fields for football and soccer.
Just outside the neighborhood’s boundaries, more recreation opportunities await at parks and on the Merrimack River. “Raymond J. Martin Riverside Park is a beautiful park and a lot of people exercise there,” Liriano says. “People have also named it the ‘Duck Park’ because there are a lot of ducks.” The park also has a boat ramp for launching watercraft into the river. Francis Morse Park sits near the river and has three softball fields, where local leagues play. “I actually play in one of the softball leagues,” Liriano says. “There are girls’ and guys’ softball leagues on the weekends, and they do a lot of events over there.” Many locals own boats, and the Merrimack River is popular for both swimming and boating. Both the Merrimack and Spicket Rivers are hotspots for fishing, as well.
Colonial-style homes abound in Tower Hill
Tower Hill offers an array of housing options to buyers. “There are a lot of single- and multi-family homes in that area,” Liriano says. “It’s mostly colonials. You can find a few triple-deckers and colonial-style, two-family homes.” Colonial-style single-family homes typically cost between $500,000 and $700,000, while prices for multi-family properties usually exceed $800,000 and climb over $1 million. Condos and townhouses often fall between $250,000 and $400,000. Some homes sit near the river on Riverside Drive. “Water Street is mainly commercial, but when it becomes Riverside Drive, there are a lot of homes with decks near the waterfront and water access,” Liriano says. Those homes offering views of the river command the highest prices. The neighborhood has yet to receive a CAP Index Crime Score.
Dining and shopping options near Tower Hill
On the east side, Route 28 is lined with local restaurants. Residents can grab breakfast at the Sunnyside Diner or find Mexican fare within the neighborhood at Taqueria La Unica. Dominican eateries, like La Nueva Fogata Restaurant and El Pez Dorado, also sit within Tower Hill. Locals can find more restaurants just west across Interstate 93. “The Irish Cottage is a really good restaurant that people go to,” Liriano says, “and I go to Anthony’s Pizza Place & Roast Beef about once a week.” Less than 2 miles west of Tower Hill, Merrimack Plaza offers grocery shopping at a Market Basket and several chain restaurants. Another Market Basket sits in southeastern Tower Hill. Many shoppers also head across the state line into New Hampshire, less than 10 miles from the center of the neighborhood, for more storefronts and to take advantage of that state’s lack of a sales tax. “A lot of people travel to Tuscan Village,” Liriano says of the shopping center located in Salem, New Hampshire. “It’s a newer place and sort of like a super-mega mall, and there are no sales taxes.”
Quick access to Boston via Interstate 93
Interstate 93 sits just west of the neighborhood, and locals can reach the highway within about 2 miles from central Tower Hill. Boston is less than 30 miles south on I-93. “People jump on 93 and, within 30 minutes, you’re in Boston,” Liriano says. “That’s the beauty of it. It’s easy access, and you can get out of Lawrence and go anywhere because 93 is right there and has an interchange with 495.” Merrimack Valley Transit (MeVa) buses run along roads like Haverhill Street and Riverside Drive. Boston Logan International Airport is about 30 miles south and Lawrence General Hospital is less than 3 miles from central Tower Hill.

Vibrant events in downtown Lawrence
Downtown Lawrence plays host to a variety of annual events. One of the area’s biggest festivals is Semana Hispana. This week-long celebration of Hispanic cultures takes place in Campagnone Park, which sits less than 2 miles from central Tower Hill. “A lot of big artists come to Semana Hispana,” Liriano says. “Campagnone Park is the main park in Lawrence, and it’s a really nice, big, green area. A lot of families come over from different towns, or from Boston or Providence, because they’re going to see mainstream artists perform there.” Another popular annual event, the Feast of the Three Saints celebrates Italian food and shuts down several streets in central Lawrence each year.
