In Almor West, homes a bit bigger than some other nearby areas attract buyers who tend to stay. This is considered a family-oriented section of Lawton, filled with long-term residents and complete with a neighborhood park and elementary school. It’s common here to see kids walking to school with their families, and plenty more amenities are available within a 3-mile radius.
The homes around Almor West date back to the 1960s and 1970s, many of them single-story ranch-style options. A lot of these homes have been updated or remodeled, and floor plans average almost 1,400 square feet. “It would just be a family home with a little more space — three-bedroom, two bath. Or three-bedroom, one and three-quarter bath,” says Janis Ferguson, a local Realtor with The Property Shoppe who has more than 30 years of experience. Many of the neighborhood’s compact lots stretch about one-fifth of an acre and fill quiet, sidewalk-lined streets. Houses sell for between $90,000 and $200,000.
The Lawton Public Schools system carries a B overall grade on Niche. The B-rated Almor West Elementary offers before- and afterschool care. Eisenhower Middle has a B-plus grade and extracurricular opportunities include a student council and a military kids club, with the 94,000-acre Fort Sill just about 7 miles away. The B-rated Eisenhower High offers a JROTC program. Also, the Lawton campus of the Great Plains Technology Center — an option for high school and adult career instruction — is 2 miles away. The public, 6,000-unit Cameron University, which has over 40 degree programs, is also a 2-mile trip.
Residents can pull right off Almor West’s neighborhood streets and onto Gore Boulevard, a thoroughfare lined with businesses and other amenities, including the 265-bed Comanche County Memorial Hospital 3 miles away. Locals can also catch the Lawton Area Transit System bus along either Gore or the intersecting 67th Street. The Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport is only 6 miles away, too.
Almor West Park borders the neighborhood’s elementary school, which is about a half-mile walk for residents. The park features a playground, two basketball courts and an abundance of open field space. Young athletes in the area also have Grandview Sports Complex, located 2 miles away and filled with eight baseball and softball diamonds.
Though Almor West is predominantly residential, locals do have a neighborhood spot for desserts: Sweetops Cakes & Bakery. Cheesecake is one of Sweetops’ specialties. Those looking for a bite to eat before sweets have multiple chains to choose from, including Subway and Marco's Pizza. Local spot Country Cafe is well-liked for homestyle dishes, too. There’s also a Walmart Neighborhood Market about 3 miles away.
Those in Almor West and around the rest of the city can visit the Lawon Farmers Market on a weekly basis. The market, which hosts some 40 vendors, takes place on Saturdays around the year along 4th Street, roughly 5 miles from Almor West. One of the area’s major annual events is the Freedom Festival at Elmer Thomas Park, also a 5-mile trip. Held on the weekend before the Fourth of July, the Freedom Festival features a soapbox derby, live music, bounce houses, fireworks and more.
