Country Club West
Homes come with possibility and affordability
The “Extreme Makeover” home is an extreme example, a complete rebuild. But investment can be fruitful here in general. “This is the neighborhood also that investors will flip, and these houses will sell,” says local Realtor Barbara Clark of Barbara Clark Realty, who has 14 years of real estate experience. The canvases prospective buyers have to work with include quite a few midcentury ranch-style homes, many of which have garage space. But it’s common for people to convert garages into extra living space, maximizing floor plans that stretch anywhere from 800 to just over 2,000 square feet. Lots of roughly one-tenth of an acre, and sometimes a bit bigger, help create a suburban atmosphere in a neighborhood that’s almost exclusively residential. Options here sell for prices from $60,000 to $215,000 based on the condition, and just under $140,000 on average. Pricing accessibility is considered one of the area’s draws.Gore Boulevard gives people their pick of local businesses
Gore Boulevard runs along Country Club West’s southern edge and is lined with retail storefronts and restaurants. Local bakery Litzel Sweet Creations is about a mile away, and patrons are enveloped with the smells of pastries as soon as they walk in. Jerry Sabader, who works at the shop, says that the cupcakes and colorful macaroons are two favorite menu items. Locals can also grab a pick-me-up from Cool Vibes Vapes and More. “We offer a little bit of everything. It’s not just a vape shop,” says owner Sarah Castro. “We have artwork, a gift shop and candies from different local vendors. We make protein shakes, coffee, and vitamin-filled teas.” Junction Remix 580 is primarily a breakfast and brunch spot but also has after-hours events on Fridays. They have a live band, and it’s something for couples to do, Castro says. The restaurant is just off Cache Road, which is has an assortment of other businesses, too, including Walgreens and a Homeland grocery store. People can find more retail at the Lawton Marketplace plaza, located just under 3 miles away on 82nd Street and home to Target, Old Navy, Burlington, T.J. Maxx and more.Find a locally grown gem at the Lawton Farmers Market
The Lawton Farmers Market is open on Saturdays around the year, plus on Tuesdays from May to September, and is located just off Gore Boulevard. About 40 vendors set up shop at the market, selling everything from fresh produce to crafts. Locals can look forward to a variety of holiday events around Lawton, from an Easter Egg Hunt at Verna Cook Park to Holiday in the Park, when Elmer Thomas Park is decorated with festive lights and has an ice rink and a petting zoo.Edison Elementary offers extended care
The Lawton Public Schools system has a B overall grade on Niche. The C-rated Edison Elementary, in the center of the neighborhood, is within walking distance for many and offers care before and after school. The B-plus-rated Eisenhower Middle has extracurricular activities including a student council and a military child club, with military base Fort Sill nearby. Eisenhower High School, which gets a B from Niche, offers a JROTC program.Country Club West is also about 2 miles from Cameron University, which has more than 40 associate, baccalaureate and master’s degree programs.
Kids can enjoy an afternoon at Eva McNally Memorial Park
The roughly 1-acre Eva McNally Memorial Park is part of the neighborhood, placing a playground set within a short walk or bike ride for kids. Elmer Thomas Park spans 143 acres and features a lake, walking trails and an 18-hole disc golf course. Those looking for more of a getaway can head 16 miles to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, where they can hike, fish or go on a scenic drive. Visitors can pass through the refuge and on to Medicine Park, a small town with Bath Lake, where swimmers can take a dip by a short waterfall. “Just about any given weekend you’ve got a bunch of Harley riders that ride through the Wichita Mountains and they all congregate at Medicine Park,” says Eddie O’Keeffe, owner of O'Keeffe's Package Store, a beer, wine and spirits store near Country Club West.LATS lets locals travel more easily
The Lawton Area Transit System, or LATS for short, has five bus routes running Monday through Saturday with stops on Gore Boulevard. Interstate 44 is about 5 miles east and leads to Oklahoma City, a 90-mile trip. The Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport is 6 miles away and offers commercial flights through American Airlines.
