Year-round activities at the Owens Recreation Center
The Owens Recreation Center is the hub for community activities and events. "The Center is completely free to come in and use," Climes says. "This is a place where parents can bring their kids and know they're in a safe environment." The center features playrooms, arts and crafts and events like the Pumpkin Run around the park. "We really like to endorse fitness and get kids outside," Climes says. Lemuel Harkey Park borders the neighborhoods and features numerous amenities, including playgrounds and basketball courts. The open green space is just north of the airport, so many visitors can watch planes take off while shooting hoops. James Edward Thornton Park and Verna Cook Park are other green spaces scattered throughout the neighborhood. Every Saturday night, March through September, The Lawton Speedway comes to life with high-octane stock-car racing. The ¼ mile dirt track is 2 miles away and is a popular weekend event. Outdoor enthusiasts can lace up their hiking boots and explore the miles of rolling prairies and ancient granite peaks of the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, 19 miles away.
