Walkability in an established Lawton neighborhood
With a park in the middle of the neighborhood and highly rated public schools close by, the preferred method of transportation in Liberty Heights is on foot. This established residential neighborhood dates back to the 1940s, but has evolved along with the city. Liberty Lake Park is in the center of the community and is a popular spot for a stroll or some sport fishing in the catch-and-release pond. Bustling shopping centers along Cache Road are less than a mile away, as are Lawton public schools. And with midcentury homes that are affordable compared to other parts of Lawton, the neighborhood is a convenient landing spot for many first-time home buyers. "The homes, the parks and the pond really make it a great place for those starting out or young families who are starting to put it together," says Jim Ard, military relocation specialist at Park Jones Realty. "The affordability and quality of the older homes lends itself to first-time buyers."

Stroll around Liberty Lake Park
Liberty Lake Park is in the heart of the neighborhood and features a popular walking trail that wraps around a small lake. Waterfowl sightings are common, and many enjoy casting in a line to catch bass or catfish. The park also has a playground and picnic area to enjoy an evening by the water. Elmer Thomas Park is 1.5 miles down the street and offers rolling hills and open green spaces to explore. The 143-acre green space is known for its prairie dog population, and the little, squirrel-like creatures can be seen peeking their head out of the ground from time to time. "You're surrounded by parks all throughout the older area of town," Ard says. "It's just park on top of park." For more wildlife sightings, the Wichita Mountain National Wildlife Refuge is 18 miles away and is home to the largest bison population managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Midcentury homes with vinyl exteriors
The neighborhood is a collection of older craftsman-style cottages that date back to the 1940s and '50s. "Houses here were built at the same time when Lawton was beginning to grow," Ard says. "They are classic turn-of-the-century houses that are a little smaller because they were designed to be a starter home." Many feature brightly colored vinyl exteriors and small-front porches. Some have been renovated in the past ten years, incorporating modern flourishes with contemporary charm. Homeowners take pride in their landscaping, and numerous well-manicured front lawns can be found under the shade of towering mature trees. Geese and ducks also enjoy these neatly maintained yards, and it's not uncommon to see a handful of waterfowl out front. Housing prices range between $80,000 and $145,000. Older builds needing some repairs sell for as little as $50,000.
