Liberty Heights
Stroll around Liberty Lake Park
Liberty Lake Park is in the heart of the neighborhood and features a popular walking trail that wraps around a small lake. Waterfowl sightings are common, and many enjoy casting in a line to catch bass or catfish. The park also has a playground and picnic area to enjoy an evening by the water. Elmer Thomas Park is 1.5 miles down the street and offers rolling hills and open green spaces to explore. The 143-acre green space is known for its prairie dog population, and the little, squirrel-like creatures can be seen peeking their head out of the ground from time to time. "You're surrounded by parks all throughout the older area of town," Ard says. "It's just park on top of park." For more wildlife sightings, the Wichita Mountain National Wildlife Refuge is 18 miles away and is home to the largest bison population managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.Celebrate Freedom at Elmer Thomas Park
The skies above Elmer Thomas Park are lit up every June during the annual Lawton Freedom Festival. The two-day celebration began in 2014 and has become a favorite among all Lawton residents. The festival offers a complete lineup of local vendors, army bands, soapbox races and a hotdog eating contest. Each night is capped off with the National Anthem and a colorful fireworks display. Other popular events in the city include the International Festival and the Lawton Farmers Market.Midcentury homes with vinyl exteriors
The neighborhood is a collection of older craftsman-style cottages that date back to the 1940s and '50s. "Houses here were built at the same time when Lawton was beginning to grow," Ard says. "They are classic turn-of-the-century houses that are a little smaller because they were designed to be a starter home." Many feature brightly colored vinyl exteriors and small-front porches. Some have been renovated in the past ten years, incorporating modern flourishes with contemporary charm. Homeowners take pride in their landscaping, and numerous well-manicured front lawns can be found under the shade of towering mature trees. Geese and ducks also enjoy these neatly maintained yards, and it's not uncommon to see a handful of waterfowl out front. Housing prices range between $80,000 and $145,000. Older builds needing some repairs sell for as little as $50,000.Pedestrian safety is important for Lawton Public Schools
Lawton public schools are under a mile away, and many students can walk to school. The Safe Routes to School Walking School Bus Program pairs student pedestrians with chosen friends and leaders, ensuring a safe commute on foot. Whittier Elementary receives a B-minus rating on Niche and has been a Great Expectations Model School since 2014. Central Middle School and Lawton High School both receive a B-minus. In 1962, Lawton High School won state championships in football, baseball, basketball, track and tennis, leading to the unofficial nickname ‘The Home of Champions’. That legacy of winning continues as the school has won numerous speech team and academic decathlon competitions since. Cameron University offers higher education, 1.5 miles away.Cache Road features local shops and restaurants
Cache Road features a cluster of shops and restaurants close to the neighborhood. Milano's is a popular local eatery that serves favorite Italian dishes like chicken parmesan and stuffed mushrooms. Down the street, Toast+Jam is a frequented breakfast and lunch spot with tasty crepes and hashbrown skillets. A handful of fast-food restaurants are nearby, including Wingstop, Whataburger and Chik-Fil-A. Walmart Supercenter is less than a mile away, which is a convenient plus for homeowners as there are only three Walmart's in all of Lawton. There are numerous entertainment venues just south of the neighborhood, including Vaska Theatre, the last of Lawton's original theaters. The Lawton Community Theater is a mile away and has hosted year-round plays, musicals and shows since the curtains first opened back in 1952.Fort Sill is a short drive away
Cache Road runs parallel to the neighborhood and has multiple bus stops serviced by the Lawton Area Transit System. Fort Sill, the largest employer in the city, is 2.5 miles away. Lawton Fort-Sill Regional Airport is under 5 miles away and offers multiple daily flights to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport via American Eagle. Oklahoma City is 87 miles away.
