Close community between Sanford and Rochester
Lebanon is a small town between Sanford, ME and Rochester, NH, with a community that can count on each other. “No matter how you feel about each other’s politics or how you feel about each other as people, if somebody is in trouble here, everybody – everybody – comes to help them,” says Deborah Wilson, longtime resident and owner of Lebanon Momentum Network, a 501(c)(3) that provides community support including a food pantry and medical ridesharing. “You don’t find that everywhere, but here you do.” While the nearby cities provide some necessities, such as groceries and hospitals, residents mainly support local businesses such as The Hen House Cafe. Wilson also mentioned several houses of worship are in and around the neighborhood. “I know when I was coming here, looking for a congregational church that was active was important to me,” she says. One of these churches is the North Lebanon Second Baptist Church, which has one of the only playgrounds in the neighborhood. The town is part of the Maine School Administrative District 60, which earns a C-plus.
Kittery shipyard is major employer
The town is car-dependent, with many residents commuting to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, which is a major employer about 27 miles away. U.S. Route 202 connects Lebanon to Rochester, just across the state line. Portsmouth International Airport is about 30 miles away, and the closest emergency room is at Frisbie Memorial Hospital, about 9 miles away.

Independent restaurants and businesses in town
The locally owned restaurants in Lebanon are common gathering places for residents. The Hen House is open for breakfast and lunch, while Train’s Tavern is a popular choice for drinks and dinner. “I don’t even drink and I go there if I feel like hearing live music or hanging out with people,” Wilson says. Darlene’s Pizza and More serves subs, burgers and, of course, pizzas. “There’s a whole lot of good restaurants right in Rochester,” says Brad Roberts, Realtor with Keller Williams Coastal and Lakes & Mountains Realty. These include Goodfellas Brick Oven Pizzeria and Mitchell Hill BBQ Grille and Brew. People get groceries from the Market Basket in Rochester or Sanford, depending on what side of town they are on. There is also an auto shop and a hardware shop in the area. Walmart and Home Depot are 10 miles away, while Target is a 13-mile drive.

ATVs, beaches and skydiving
With so much open space, many people explore the ATV trails that run throughout town, and the Southern Maine ATV Club maintains many of these trails and encourages safe riding. Fernald Shore is open from May to September every year, with swimming, picnicking and sunbathing. The Lebanon Little League plays at the field on Lower Middle Road, and The Ethel Lizotte Playground is at the North Lebanon Second Baptist Church. “A lot of moms will bring their kids there and hang out with each other,” Wilson says. Both locals and tourists visit Skydive New England. “I think everybody in town who wants to go skydiving has gone at least once,” Wilson says.

Low mill rates in Lebanon
Trees fill Lebanon, opening up to homes on at least an acre of land. “Lebanon is very rural, with a lot of farmhouses and farmland,” Roberts says. Some of those farmhouses date back to the 18th century, although there is a lot of newer construction, with late 20th-century ranch styles, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals mixed with contemporary properties. Prices typically range from $225,000 to $575,000. “Housing has gone up quite a bit over the past couple of years, but our mill rate has remained quite low,” Wilson says. The current rate is about 9.64%. Lebanon receives a CAP Index Crime Score of one out of 10, compared to the national average of four out of 10.

Noble students attend Sanford vocational school
Lebanon is part of the Maine School Administrative District Unit 60. Hanson School teaches kindergarten through third grade, while Lebanon Elementary School has fourth and fifth grade. Both schools, as well as Noble Middle School, earn a B-minus from Niche. Noble High School scores a C-plus and offers vocational classes through the Sanford Regional Technical Center, ranging from electrical wiring to early childhood education. “It’s a blue-collar town, really, and a lot of children have chosen to follow the technical path,” Wilson says. She also says parents will enroll their children at the Blueprints Learning Center, a daycare that works with anyone from eight weeks old to fifth grade.

Community events and “Fire Island”
The town puts on several smaller events throughout the year, including a trunk-or-treat event in the fall and an easter egg hunt in the spring. Every summer, on the Saturday before the Fourth of July, locals head to Milton Three Ponds to watch what they call “Fire Island.” “People go around to local businesses and get all the old palettes and build them up into big, huge skyscrapers,” Wilson says. “Then they light it on fire.” The bonfire is paired with an informal fireworks display.
