Rural community surrounded by towering mountains and a national forest
At first glance, Pine Valley might appear to be nothing more than a small, unincorporated community of under 300 people in Washington County. However, on closer inspection, this 1855 settlement reveals itself as a secluded retreat from modern life near national forests and a manmade reservoir. Surrounded by the Pine Valley Mountains, the alpine town is located 6,500 feet above sea level and 20 degrees cooler than the desert floor. It’s known for cross-country skiing, fishing and trail networks. “Pine Valley is on the outskirts of St. George, about a 40-minute drive. It’s mountainous, with lots of pine trees, ponderosa and a river. There are pretty ranches with horses and cows and a recreation area that’s great for fishing, hiking and camping,” says Samantha Orvin, a Realtor and team lead with Red Rock Real Estate with over 20 years of experience. “Pine Mountain flanks the valley. It’s huge, and people in St. George use it as a landmark to find North. It’s covered in snow in the winter and has red rock formations in front of it. The views are stunning.”
Outdoor recreation in the Dixie National Forest
The town is surrounded by rugged, rustic landscapes with miles of hiking and horse trails just outside the community. The Pine Valley Recreation Area and Reservoir lies two-and-a-half miles from the center of Pine Valley. It has tent and RV camping sites and is popular with snowshoers and cross-country skiers in the winter. There are also volleyball courts, horseshoe pits and an amphitheater around the fishing reservoir. Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness is almost four miles from the town center and is part of Dixie National Forest. Encompassing over 50,000 acres, the wilderness area runs through the Pine Mountains and is home to unique species like the zebra-tailed lizard and Uinta chipmunk. It’s known for incredible views of the mountains and desert, camping and wildlife watching, in addition to 150 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails.

Secluded community with cabin-style properties and large lots
Pine Valley has a variety of real estate options even though the community has a limited amount of housing available. This is due to the area being surrounded by publicly owned lands, preventing heavy development. The town has a mix of cabins, particularly A-frames, luxury homes and modified farmhouses. Summer homes were built in the 1940s, and each year, the population still swells in the summer months as part-time residents return. “Pine Valley is a semi-rural mountain community. There are a lot of large parcels, small farms and horse properties, and there’s a newer area with some luxury homes. There’s a mix of cabin-style properties and no commercial developments in the area,” says Mark Peterson, an associate broker and Realtor with Red Rock Real Estate’s Quantum Realty Group with 40 years of experience. Homes sell for an average price of $566,000 after 106 days on the market. Cabins and modified farmhouses range from $320,000 to $875,000, while luxury homes start around $800,000 and continue to $1.5 million.

Nationally recognized historic chapel
The town’s most recognizable landmark is the historic Pine Valley Chapel, the oldest Latter-Day Saints chapel in continuous use. It was built without nails by a Scottish shipbuilder in 1868. He wasn’t familiar with architecture, so he designed the chapel as a ‘ship turned upside down’ and used rawhide and wooden pegs to hold the church together. The building was immediately used as a schoolhouse, community center and worship space. The chapel was remodeled in the 1960s and 2004 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
The Historic Pine Valley Chapel was built in the 1800s and welcomes visitors for worship.

Avoiding wildfire risks
Pine Valley faces the risk of wildfires. In the past five years, several wildfires of varying sizes have broken out in the community. To combat these fast-moving blazes, the USDA Forest Service has created the Pine Valley Priority Landscape Project to install and maintain critical infrastructure in the area. The project aims to improve watershed health and protect recreation spots. The Pine Valley Fire House is also centrally located in town to reduce response times.
