Location is everywhere in The Villages, the sprawling 55-plus master-planned community in Central Florida. While there are things to do in and near each neighborhood, those looking for the highest concentration of entertainment options opt to live near one of The Villages’ three town squares. The Village of Gilchrist is one of the neighborhoods with an enviable proximity to both Brownwood Paddock and Sumter Landing, about 3 and 5 miles away, respectively. This proximity to both squares' events, shopping and dining options is one of the main draws to the neighborhood, according to Karen Kamperman, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Cornerstone Realty and current resident of The Villages. “If you want to just walk your dog, you can live anywhere. But if you want to be close to everything that’s going on, you’ll want to live here,” she says.
Village of Gilchrist
Close to Brownwood Paddock and Lake Sumter Landing
One of the biggest draws to Gilchrist is its proximity to Brownwood Paddock, one of the three prominent "town squares" in The Villages, which are popular gathering spots for dining and nightly events. Brownwood is about 3 miles away, near State Route 44 and has a playful western theme. Shops and restaurants run along Brownwood's perimeter, and in the center is a large open square where there are events every night, usually featuring live music and dancing. "The only nights where there aren't events is when there’s thunder and lightning, or it gets too cold. Otherwise, it’s seven days a week,” Kamperman says. Some of the most popular restaurants at Brownwood are City Fire American Oven & Bar, a family-owned spot serving pizza, sandwiches and salads, and Bluefin, which specializes in seafood and serves everything from fish tacos to seared sea bass. Lake Sumter Landing, another of The Village’s town squares, is about five miles away and offers similar shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities, overlooking Lake Sumter. Residents head to Pinellas Plaza shopping center to pick up groceries at Winn-Dixie and visit the Sumter County Library. Pinellas Plaza also offers services like banks and salons.
Three-bedroom custom homes throughout the neighborhood
The homes in Gilchrist are a mix of Designer style and Bungalow Villas with three bedrooms and two or three bathrooms. They feature big front windows and backyard lanais. Short driveways lead to two-car garages—some with special parking for golf carts, many residents' primary mode of transportation around the neighborhood. Front yards, while compact, are neatly manicured with small palm trees and flowers. Prices typically range from the low $400,000s to mid $700,000s, though a few homes that sit along the Evans Prairie Country Club golf course are priced from $800,000 to just over one million dollars. The streets do not have sidewalks but are quiet and expansive, leaving plenty of space for walks and bike rides.
Golf, swimming, bocce and more are close by
The Gilchrist Neighborhood Recreation Center sits in the neighborhood's center and features many amenities that help residents stay active. While this green space is compact, it features horseshoes, shuffleboard, bocce and one of The Villages' many adult-only pools. Just outside the neighborhood is Bradenton Pool and Recreation Center, which offers a family pool, tennis and pickleball outside, and multiple pool tables indoors. Evans Prairie Country Club is just outside the neighborhood and features a 27-hole course open year-round. Golf is one of the many activities offered within The Villages, and residents can enjoy it, as well as the over 3,000 clubs and social events available, after paying the annual activities fee.
It's easy to get around by golf cart
Due to The Villages’ continued growth, traffic can be challenging between neighborhoods, so many residents opt to leave their cars at home and travel by golf cart. To get outside the community, SR-44 is nearby and connects to Orlando, about 55 miles away.
