The Village of Sanibel is a close-knit neighborhood in the country’s largest 55-plus community, The Villages. Chats at the Sanibel Pool, pop-up driveway parties and monthly dinners with neighbors are commonplace in this subdivision, according to villager Cheryl Parisi-Ciolfi, a Realtor with RE/MAX Foxfire. And she says this affable atmosphere isn’t unique to Sanibel. The Villages itself is known for an incredibly active social scene, earning the retirement community a seemingly paradoxical nickname – “Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.” The Village of Sanibel alone has two recreation centers, a country club and a golf course. From softball fields to platform tennis courts, plenty more amenities are within a 5-mile radius. “What was amazing to me when I first moved here — and what is still amazing to me — is seeing people playing sports, being active and staying healthy in their 90s,” says villager Cheryl Parisi-Ciolfi, a Realtor with RE/MAX Foxfire. “It’s really nice to see. Yes, we’re a 55-plus community, but we have a wide range of ages. Everything is on a huge scale here. You get this whole different perspective on what it can be like to retire and still live a very full life.”

Cottages to Golf Course Designer Homes
The Villages is a deed-restricted community, so the Village of Sanibel’s streets are lined by manicured lawns complete with subtropical front gardens, mature Sylvester Palms and live oaks. Housing prices start with Cottage Homes, small frame-construction properties on small lots. They range from $300,000 to $500,000. Courtyard Villas range from $350,000 to $500,000. These compact single-family homes also sit on small lots, but they feature private courtyards for enjoying the Central Florida sun. Designer Homes range from the mid $400,000s to the mid $600,000s unless located on a golf course. Designer Homes with fairway views range between $600,000 and $1.1 million. Models in the Designer Home series vary architecturally, including Spanish Revival and Minimal Traditional styles. All residents of the Villages can access recreation centers, executive golf courses, country clubs and more for free by paying a monthly amenity fee.

Captiva Recreation Center and Bonifay Country Club
The south side of The Villages is rumored to be less amenity-rich, which may cause some to hesitate when considering the Village of Sanibel. While it’s true that its residents have to ride one or two miles farther when heading to the closest town square, plenty of recreational facilities are within walking distance. The Sanibel Pool is a neighborhood hangout with set-ups for bocce and shuffleboard. One street over, Captiva Recreation Center has pickleball and tennis courts and gathering rooms for club meetings. There are more than 3,000 clubs in the Villages, from car enthusiast to pet-loving collectives to golf clubs. Volusia Executive Golf Course and Sarasota Executive Golf Course are great starting points for newer players. Bonifay Championship Golf Course encircles Bonifay Country Club. The club’s restaurant whisks customers to the coast with a beachy interior and Caribbean cuisine. Live entertainment comes to the country club weekly.
Captiva Rec Center always has something for active Village of Sanibel residents.

Nightly live shows at Brownwood Paddock Square
Like clockwork, villagers hop in their golf carts and head to the nearest town square around 5 p.m. to enjoy the nightly free entertainment. Brownwood Paddock Square is about 4 miles from the Village of Sanibel. This western-themed plaza is full of boutiques and restaurants. At Kylie’s Closet Jewelry Boutique, customers enjoy a cozy atmosphere while browsing a unique variety of jewelry, trinkets and clothes. Bluefin Grill & Bar is a staple dinner spot with a menu that includes fresh grilled fish drizzled in a scratch-made sauce, such as garlic tarragon butter sauce. The restaurant’s patio sits across the street from the heart of the square, an outdoor venue with a stage and stadium-style seating. “Three-hundred-sixty-five days a year, there are people in the square from 5 to 9 p.m.,” Parisi-Ciolfi says. “It’s not always music; there are all kinds of shows. We do holiday events in the squares, too. Halloween, Christmas, Saint Patty’s Day, Cinco De Mayo… We even have a Strawberry Festival. Really, just any excuse for an event.” As for day-to-day shopping, Colony Plaza is just over a mile away on Sumter County Road 466A. It has Publix, Walgreens, Citizens First Bank and various chain restaurants.

The Villages’ tunnels and bridges
Golf carts are not permitted on main roads like 466A. However, paved pathways run alongside these thoroughfares, connecting to tunnels and bridges that allow golf carts to travel across safely. A tunnel is less than a mile from Sanibel, and it provides a direct route to Colony Plaza. The area outside of The Villages is car-dependent. Florida’s Turnpike is 10 miles away. Orlando has the closest international airport, 60 miles away. It’s a 3-mile drive to the nearest hospital, HCA Florida Trailwinds Village Emergency.
