Golfing and more in this centrally located Village
The Villages, the country’s largest 55-plus community, is packed with fitness centers, golf courses, pools and other sporting facilities. And the centrally located Village of Sunset Pointe offers is closer to more of these amenities than many other villages in the community. The neighborhood has two golf courses and is adjacent to two recreation centers, putting everything from fitness classes to pickleball courts to fairways within walking—or golf carting—distance of every home. “Oh, you’ve gotta love your golf cart. Everyone’s got one. Everyone’s riding them around,” says Villages resident Pat Serafino, a Realtor with Realty Executives. “People go all out with them. I know this retired general who got his to look like a tank. I just put lights and what-have-you all over mine. It’s fun.” Golf carts of all shapes, colors and styles can be seen parked along the red-brick sidewalks of any town square; the nearest one, Lake Sumter Landing Market Square, is just 2 miles from Sunset Pointe.

Homes in the Village of Sunset Point
The deed-restricted Village of Sunset Pointe features many housing models from several series. Patio Villas range from $200,000 to $350,000 and are located within the subcommunity of Hickory Grove Villas. These zero-lot-line properties feature one to three bedrooms and screened-in patios. Cottage homes range from $300,000 to around $400,000 and have more square footage and sit on larger lots than the Patio Villas. Designer homes are the most popular in the neighborhood and feature more architectural diversity, with influences ranging from Spanish Revival to Minimal Traditional styles. Floorplans start at a little more than 2,000 square feet, and prices generally range from $400,000 to the high $600,000s, but golf course views can kick prices up to more than $900,000. Premier homes, The Villages’ priciest series, are built on concrete block foundations and have stucco exteriors. These homes can be up to 5,000 square feet, and prices range from $600,000 to more than $1 million. Spanish eclectic designs, including columns and arches, are common. Many premier homes feature private pools, a rare feature in The Villages.

Golf courses galore
Residents of The Villages are automatic members of each country club. Cane Garden Country Club and its 27-hole course are less than a mile from the Village of Sunset Pointe. The club’s restaurant is particularly popular, featuring a patio with sunset views. Championship courses like Cane Garden’s are semi-private and require a greens fee. To avoid said fee, many residents stick to the executive courses, like those found in Sunset Point. Heron Executive Golf Course rolls along the shores of Lake Miona on one side of the neighborhood. Pelican Executive Golf Course—one of The Villages’ most difficult courses—is set on another. Mature oaks strung with Spanish moss dapple the course’s landscape, which wraps around a pond, forcing golfers to hit over water. Additionally, two rec centers are at either end of Sunset Pointe. Hibiscus Recreation Center is where folks lounge by the pool or gather with clubmates in one of the meeting rooms. It shares many of the same facilities as Lake Miona Recreation Center, including pickleball and tennis courts, but its family pool is open to registered guests, including young children. Miona Recreation’s sports pool is exclusive to residents and is strictly used for exercise.

Lake Sumter Landing Market Square
Lake Sumter Landing Market Square is a lakefront shopping plaza with boutiques, a movie theater and an outdoor venue that hosts nightly live entertainment. There are restaurants around the plaza for every occasion. Serafino recommends Cody’s Original Roadhouse for a sports bar vibe. The casual spot can get lively in season, so those interested in someplace quieter may opt to dine at Serafino’s second recommendation, Redsauce. Family-owned and -operated, this Italian-American restaurant pays homage to mom-and-pop “red-sauce" joints. The town square is also a hub for businesses, with a Winn-Dixie, a pharmacy and several doctors’ offices.

Orlando is 60 miles away
Most streets in The Villages are golf-cart-friendly, and “some people actually give up their cars,” Serafino says. Golf-cart riders, bikers, joggers and walkers alike can travel on paved pathways parallel to main thoroughfares. But going anywhere beyond The Villages requires a car. The closest major city is Orlando, approximately 60 miles away. Orlando International Airport is just a few miles farther. The simplest way to make the drive is to take Florida’s Turnpike, accessible less than 10 miles south of Sunset Pointe.
