Near the action of downtown
French Hill was named for the French-speaking Canadian immigrants who settled the neighborhood in the 20th century. Today the area is more notable for the abundance of shops and restaurants around it, with a mall to the east and small businesses to the west. The neighborhood protrudes into downtown Leominster, and most of the homes are within a mile of this dense commercial area. Downtown hosts a handful of beloved local restaurants and watering holes, says Coldwell Banker Realty Sales Associate Sherri Tammelin Rogers, who lived in Leominster for nearly 30 years. “You could do a pub crawl in the downtown area.” Tammelin Rogers recommends Brady’s, where the kitchen is led by award-winning chef Bill Brady. Within a few blocks, locals may order a brick-oven-fired pizza from Logan’s Table, dine on brunch at The Columbia Tavern or sip a craft beer at The Fix Burger Bar.

Victorians and Cape Cods wedged together
Although most residents rent, single-family homeowners live among the neighborhood’s tight grid of streets. Houses are wedged close together, so many homes are compact Cape Cods or minimal tradition houses. Others are skinny Victorians built three stories tall to maximize living space. A two-bedroom house far from downtown may cost roughly $210,000, but three-bedroom homes in walking distance of the city center are more likely to range between the mid-$300,000s and mid-$500,000s. Budding landlords or investors may pay more than half a million dollars for a multifamily home.
French Hill has a few modern homes built to a traditional aesthetic such as this neo-colonial.

A college-like facility at Doyle Field
Sporting events are common thanks to Doyle Field. This 20-acre chunk of land was gifted to the city in the 1930s, but a series of upgrades have turned it into a state-of-the-art athletic complex with a row of pickleball courts and a football stadium used by Leominster High School. “It would be the envy of a lot of college football fields,” says Tammelin Rogers. “Kids get to run through a tunnel to take the field.” In addition, recreational sports leagues use Doyle Field, walkers stroll the grounds and children flock to Imagination Station, the park’s playground.

Leominster Public Schools dish up innovative learning methods
The neighborhood is part of the Leominster Public Schools district, and every campus a child may attend between kindergarten and 12th grade is within 4 miles on the neighborhood. Kids can start at Northwest Elementary, which earns a Niche grade of C-plus. Older students take classes at Sky View Middle School, also graded a C-plus. B-rated Leominster High School is home to the district’s Center for Technical Education and Innovation. There, locals can dine on eggplant parmesan and baked scallops at Appleseeds, a restaurant operated by students and instructors in the center’s culinary arts program.
Retail concentrates around The Mall at Whitney Field
Just north of downtown, The Mall at Whitney Field houses 70 shops, namely department stores and fashion brands. Next to the mall, locals grab ingredients at Market Basket grocery store and prepare for household projects at The Home Depot. Stuck among the shops, Entertainment Cinemas offers a spot to catch a movie. Five miles away, HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital provides emergency and specialty medical care.

Connect across Massachusetts
Massachusetts Route 2 extends through the neighborhood, which motorists can hop on to start the 50-mile drive to Boston. That same highway connects to Interstate 195, the quickest way to make the 25-mile drive to Worcester. Commuters who prefer to skip traffic may head less than a mile outside the neighborhood to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s North Leominster station to ride the commuter rail for the two-hour trip to Boston. Worcester Regional Airport is the closest air travel hub, but Boston Logan International Airport offers a wider selection of destinations.

Johnny Appleseed celebrated downtown
How does a city commemorate being the birthplace of Johnny Appleseed? For Leominster, the answer is simple: pack downtown with more than 200 tents offering crafts, live music and ice cream-topped apple crisp. Before he earned the nickname Johnny Appleseed, John Chapman was born in Leominster in 1774. For 30 years, the city has celebrated Chapman and the fruit he planted across the American frontier with the Johnny Appleseed Arts and Cultural Festival. It’s just one of the events that Downtown Leominster hosts throughout the year, which also includes concerts, food festivals and even a tractor parade.
