A community that looks out for one another
Roughly 24 miles south of Lansing is Leslie, a rural township of family farms with an extremely close and active community looking out for one another. Residents love supporting the local restaurants along Main Street and within its town center, but aren’t far from other options when needed. “It’s a small rural community that has good access to other major metropolitan areas,” says Jody Leatherberry, a real estate agent and team leader with RE/MAX Real Estate Professionals who has over 15 years of experience. “The residents there are also generally helpful people.”

Additional housing for a growing populaiton
As the population of Leslie grows, houses continue to pop up on the market – the neighborhood is a mixture of older homes and newly constructed ones. Both smaller and expansive ranch-style homes can be found within a price range of $160,000 to $285,000 alongside similarly priced two-story homes. Depending on when they were built, these properties can be found with either Colonial-inspired architecture or Victorian features. Out in the country, large farmhouses with wide front porches go for roughly $180,000 and have a lot of land. Those who need a lower cost of living can check out Leslie Estates Manufactured Housing Community with its pre-built mobile homes and modern amenities for around $72,000 to $150,000.

Plenty of places to stretch your legs
In addition to Leslie’s rolling farmlands, there are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Russell Park has a giant wooden playground for little ones to explore, plus a picnic area and pavilions for the adults watching them. Sports enthusiasts can practice their skills on the soccer fields and basketball courts at Leslie Centennial Park. The Veteran’s Memorial Park, also known as Tuttle Park, doesn’t have much of a green space for play, but the gazebo is a beautiful spot for taking photos. At the very edge of the neighborhood, Meridian-Baseline State Park provides 108 acres of woodlands that residents can enjoy. Many walk along the 1.4-mile trail and check out the two monuments that designate the historic measurements of Michigan’s townships and ranges.

Small-town restaurants with comfort food
Despite its rural landscape, it's easy to find shopping and dining in Leslie. Main Street has several local restaurants and commercial shops for residents to visit. Main Street Bakery and Café, known for its freshly baked bread and pastries, is a great breakfast spot that’s featured in Best Things Michigan’s “10 Best Croissants in Michigan.” For lunch or dinner, Crossroads Grill and Bar serves savory burgers and loaded hot dogs. Residents who plan to cook their own meals can head to Merindorf Meats and More for fresh cuts and Blackhawk Produce for their fruits and vegetables. For more retail and restaurant options, people will travel roughly 9 miles to Mason to get groceries from Meijer and explore the many antique stores in the area. Mason also has several fast-food chains like Big Boy, Arby’s, Little Caesar’s and more.

Regular gatherings for the neighbors
Leslie’s Chamber of Commerce is known for putting on several annual events throughout the year. “They have a Fall Festival, a Christmas Parade and various other things throughout the summer like basketball tournaments,” Leatherberry says. These events draw residents from all over the township and tend to have food vendors and live music. With all the family farms within the neighborhood, it’s also easy to find farmer’s markets on the weekend to purchase fresh produce.

Wide quiet streets for easy commuting
Since there is no offered form of public transportation, Leslie residents rely on their own vehicles to get around the neighborhood. Michigan Interstate 127 cuts through the area and helps people travel to other places. When residents need to travel far, they can head 10 miles north to the Mason Jewett Airport.
