A residential neighborhood lined with alliterative streets

Thornridge sits in eastern Pennsylvania, a Levittown community characterized by an alliterative array of street names all starting with the same letter as the neighborhood itself. Looping residential streets lined with front lawns and sidewalks are framed by mid-century ranch-style homes, almost all of which date to the 1950s when the area was established. “It’s very friendly and very community-based,” says Helen Irvine, a Realtor with Keller Williams Langhorne. “I really feel like people are helping and looking out for each other. I love the neighborhood and I love Levittown. It’s a really accessible, affordable, good kind of hometown atmosphere.” New Falls Road bounds the neighborhood to the northwest. Throughout the year, residents can head to the street to find local restaurants, but at certain points on the calendar, the thoroughfare also plays host to parades that march down New Falls and bring the community together. “The affordability is there, the taxes are low and it’s a central location to the community park, schools and good local restaurants,” says Irvine, who grew up in Thornridge and still lives in the area. “Residents don’t have to go very far for little pub restaurants, like Puss ‘n Boots Tavern. You’re going to walk into those little places and it’ll be like ‘Cheers.’ You’re going to know people there.”

Ranch-style homes line suburban streets

After successfully creating the first Levittown in Long Island, New York, a real estate development company called Levitt & Sons went to work to create the second Levittown about 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia. Levitt & Sons built on slabs rather than basements and stuck to six basic models of homes, including ranch-styles and Cape Cods, which helped with their mass production business model. The collection of neighborhoods the company constructed – originally intended to house returning World War II veterans – came to be known as Levittown. Thornridge is one of many neighborhoods that fall under the Levittown umbrella, and as is customary in Levittown neighborhoods, all the street names begin with the same letter as the neighborhood’s name. Thornridge Drive is the main thoroughfare through the area, but residents might live on Timber Lane, Thornyapple Lane, Teaberry Lane or one of several other side streets whose name begins with the letter T. Like all Levittown neighborhoods, Thornridge is almost entirely residential, with single-family homes making up all of the properties within the neighborhood. One distinguishing feature of the neighborhood is the fact that there is only a single style of architecture to be found in the neighborhood. “Thornridge has all ranch-style models,” Irvine says, adding that Thornridge Drive spans much of the neighborhood and serves as a point of reference. “There’s a top section and a bottom section – people say they live at the top of the drive or the bottom of the drive.” Prices typically range from $350,000 to $450,000. Thornridge has a CAP crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the nationwide average of 4.

State routes to the north and east of the neighborhood

Route 13 runs north-to-south about a mile east of the neighborhood, with its nearly-50-mile expanse linking Thornridge with Philadelphia, Chester, and Bristol in Pennsylvania. “It’s super easy from Thornridge, or just even that center area of Levittown, because you have all these interstates,” Irvine says. “There’s Route 1 and Route 13, and along those are all the train stations. Along Route 13, you could easily get into Philly.” Philadelphia is between about 25 and 30 miles south, while Trenton is less than 10 miles away across the river. Route 1 runs east-to-west to around 2 miles north of Thornridge, and drivers can reach New Jersey by taking the highway eastward across the Delaware River. “If you take Route 1 over into Trenton, you could get into New York City really easily,” Irvine says. “That’s what’s making our area very desirable.” Interstate 295 sits west of the neighborhood and is accessible via Route 1, requiring a drive of less than 5 miles from central Thornridge.

Small parks around the neighborhood and lakes to the east

Martins Creek runs through portions of northern Thornridge, branching out beyond the neighborhood to the north and east. Falls Township Community Park sits less than 4 miles southeast across Route 13 and is a popular gathering spot for locals. “There’s a big body of water, a fishing pier and paddleboats and kayaks,” Irvine says. “In the summertime, they have concerts on summer nights. There are a lot of festivals, fairs and things for the kids there. There are big walking paths, a skateboarding park, a dog park and you can play hockey there.” Anglers can fish at Falls Township Lake for bass, while Van Sciver Lake sits just east of the park and spans almost 1,500 acres. The lake is dotted with islands and accommodates fishing, canoeing and more.

Events celebrating Thornridge and greater Levittown

Less than 2 miles north of the neighborhood, Historic Fallsington Day takes place around Yardley Avenue and celebrates the legacy of the area. “It’s a big thing,” Irvine says. “They close down the street and it’s not very far from Thornridge. It’s this little, historic town.” The event features live entertainment, vendors, food and more, all from local sources. New Falls Road runs along the edge of Thornridge and serves as a main thoroughfare, not just for traffic, but for other celebrations. “There are parades that go down New Falls Road, like Memorial Day parades and St. Patrick’s Day parades,” Irvine says. “Thornridge backs up to those parades.” Falls Township Community Park also plays host to events, like yard sales, holiday-themed scavenger hunts, community fairs and the annual Touch-a-Truck, when visitors can walk amidst a variety of first-responder, construction and other types of vehicles.
