Pond Road
Neighborhood in Lewiston, Maine
Androscoggin County 04240
Ranches and colonial-style homes with green space
Quiet, residential streets, which often end in cul-de-sacs, are lined with groves of pine trees and cool-toned houses with small yards. Many properties don’t have attached garages, but sheds and standalone garages have been added for additional storage. Pond Road’s oldest homes are cottages and bungalows, which were built between the 1920s and 1940s and usually cost between $150,000 and $300,000. Ranch-style homes, capes and bi-level properties were added in the mid-to-late 20th century; buyers can find these for between $200,000 and $400,000. There are also a few lots for residents to build their own homes, which are priced between $50,000 and $65,000 for a third of an acre.Birdwatching, hiking and disc golfing nearby
There aren’t any parks in Pond Road, but Lewiston has several outdoor spaces close by. The entrance for a 450-acre wooded preserve called Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary is just west of the neighborhood. Birdwatchers, joggers and hikers enjoy a network of trails that wind through forests and meadows and by small brooks in the nature preserve. During the winter, there are groomed snowmobile trails that begin in the neighborhood, just off Rideout Avenue. “Local snowmobiling clubs take good care of the trails, grooming and marking them. They usually report to a larger state organization that puts out monthly newsletters and information about the trails,” says Brian DuBois, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who has served the area for 11 years. Members of the Hillside Family Riders Snowmobile Club are responsible for the trails around Pond Road. Lewiston also has opportunities for other outdoor recreation; disc golfers can play on two 18-hole courses at Devils Grove Disc Golf, and the downtown area has pocket parks along the Androscoggin River. Residents can pick up the Auburn Riverside trail, a 1.6-mile paved footpath that has a bridge to cross from Lewiston into Auburn, at Simard-Payne Memorial Park. Fishermen also find spots to cast a line along the waterway.Clubs and activities at Lewiston High School
Kids can begin at Montello Elementary School, which serves grades kindergarten through 6th and has a C-minus rating from Niche. Afterward, students can move on to Lewiston Middle School, also rated a C-minus. Older students may progress to Lewiston High School, which scores a C-plus. The high school encourages student engagement with extracurriculars like mock trial, K-pop club, educators rising club and gaming and coding club.Residents head to downtown Lewiston for events
While there aren’t any events in the low-key Pond Road neighborhood, its location in Lewiston means that gatherings are consistently happening close by. “More than half of Maine’s population lives within an hour’s drive of Lewiston, so it’s chosen to host a lot of events,” DuBois says. Every summer, high school football players from all over the state are chosen to compete in the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl. “They pick at least one player from most high schools in the state, and each has to raise money for the Shriner’s hospital,” DuBois adds. Downtown Lewiston’s most well-known event is the annual hot air balloon festival in August, when community members listen to live music and order food from local booths as they watch colorful balloons float above Lewiston and Auburn. The community gathers to honor Juneteenth with a parade, block party and live music. In early December, the city hosts a festive event at Dufresne Plaza, complete with carolers, ice skating and live reindeer.Buses and central roadways connect residents to all of Lewiston and Auburn
Lewiston/Auburn’s public transportation system, Citylink, operates bus stops along Sabattus Road. Residents can board the Sabattus Street Loop route, which has stops at Hannaford and St. Mary’s Medical Center. Aside from the bus stops, most of the neighborhood is car-centric; drivers turn onto Sabattus Street to head toward the workplaces downtown. “There’s also nearby Turnpike access, which is an easy stretch for anyone going down to Portland for work,” DuBois says. Commuters drive south to merge onto Interstate 95 and travel 42 miles to Portland, the largest city in the state. Augusta, Maine’s capital, is a 30-mile drive northeast on the same highway.Chain restaurants on Sabattus Street
Sabattus Street, which bounds Pond Road from the north, is lined with chain restaurants and a few locally owned eateries. For relaxed dinners of subs, pizza and whoopie pies, neighbors meet up at Sam’s Italian Foods, a regional chain restaurant. Dubois Café is a classic homestyle diner that serves home fries and crepes for breakfast, and Val’s Drive-In is a cash-only stand with a car hop service, offering lobster rolls and poutine. Diners fill their plates with wontons, lo mein and orange chicken at New Lewiston Mandarin Buffet, a low-key spot for American Chinese fare. Regional supermarket Hannaford stocks groceries. To spend an afternoon wandering around the aisles at T.J. Maxx or Target, residents will drive a little over 3 miles northwest to Auburn.
