Bonita is a horse country community that’s “just right”
Named after an old railroad stop between Versailles and Midway, Bonita is one of several communities in the Lexington metro area's horse country. This rural and aptly named area features acres of crop fields and equine operations breeding and preparing the next generation of racehorses. Luxurious farms stand out with their horse statues, gated entrances and stone walls running along the edge of the properties. Notable stables include the WinStar Farm, previously home to champions like Triple Crown winner Justify.
For the community itself, the area is a haven away from the neighboring city life. “It’s friendly, relaxed, Woodford County Schools are a good school district — it’s just right,” says Tony Cissell, manager of the Three Chimneys Farm. “It’s a great place to live. It’s one of those places you almost don’t want someone writing about because you don’t want to ruin it.”
Bonita residents can tour WinStar Farm, which has won Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Breeder.
Homes in Bonita have an average value of $932,021.

Upscale ranch-style homes on spacious farmland
Bonita has fenced farmland stretched across a gently rolling landscape. Homes stand alone on multi-acre lots and face narrow country roads lined by mature trees. Like the horse farms, several homes sit on gated properties. The housing includes upscale ranch-style homes and larger properties with Colonial and Greek touches. Homes, however, don’t sell frequently. Costs in the lower range go from about $300,000 to $650,000, while more high-end options with generous land go from $1 million to $2.2 million. The area’s overall CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.
Ranch homes in Bonita are an affordable option for new homebuyers.
The average household income in Bonita is around $105,025.

Comfort foods and farm view at Wallace Station Deli and Bakery
Although Bonita doesn’t have an active dining scene, the Wallace Station Deli and Bakery is on the edge of the community. The rustic establishment serves sandwiches, burgers and baked treats. Small bands of musicians occasionally entertain patrons, and the restaurant has an outdoor area with views of a barn. For more options, Cissell recommends checking out the scene in Midway, which he says has turned into quite the niche spot for dining. A popular choice is the Heirloom Restaurant, which serves gourmet comfort foods that patrons can pair with fresh cocktails or wine. “It’s as good a restaurant as you’ll find anywhere. We get people from England, Ireland, France,” Cissell says. Foodies seeking more diverse options may try out the Mexican fare at Don Jockey. There's a Kroger in nearby Versailles.
Bonita residents enjoy lunch at Wallace Station Deli and Bakery, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023.

Celebrating annual festivities in neighboring Midway
Midway draws many people to its festivals. Vendor booths and crowds fill downtown Midway in September for its annual Fall Festival, considered one of Central Kentucky’s top festivities. The booths sell various foods and crafts, while live music and activities like pottery demonstrations keep the crowds entertained. June’s Bourbon & Blues Festival also offers more music and an opportunity to sample authentic Kentucky whiskey.
Access to multiple Lexington area thoroughfares
Midway Road cuts through Bonita, providing a direct route to Midway and Versailles. The heart of the community is only a few miles from either city. The Old Frankfort Pike takes commuters directly toward downtown Lexington, 13 miles east. Bonita is also minutes from Interstate 64, which provides a commuter route to communities and smaller cities on the outskirts of Lexington. Bonita is also about a dozen miles from the Blue Grass Airport. “If you’re in Midway, you’re five minutes from the interstate and only 15 minutes from the airport. You get the big pluses of city life, as far as flights, but none of the urban issues as far as crowdedness. It’s very bucolic,” Cissell says. The Bluegrass Community Hospital is the closest medical facility.
