Historic South Hill
Old School Coffee House, Joe Bologna’s Restaurant & Pizzeria and more
At Old School Coffee, patrons order hand-crafted drinks like The Student and The Principal. “I think they have the best coffee in town,” says Zara Christopher, the manager at Old Town Violins, a full-service orchestral strings shop in the community. For food out, Christopher says she walks to the award-winning Joe Bologna’s Restaurant & Pizzeria. “I saved all of the historical parts of this building,” Bologna says. “We kept and restored all the stained glass windows, which are from the 1890s; the original floors are black tile from Eastern Kentucky.” Just one street over is The Local Taco, which is particularly popular among University of Kentucky students. Locals can head next door to Tin Roof to enjoy drinks and live music. For groceries, they can go to Historic South Hill’s Target location. Those wanting fresh produce head just outside of the neighborhood to the Lexington Farmers Market’s Warehouse Block location, which runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid-May until mid-November.Brick Federals, Greek Revivals and more
Historic South Hill's Adam Rankin House dates back to 1784, making it Lexington's oldest home. However, the tightly packed sidewalk-lined streets are also home to 19th-century constructions like brick Greek Revivals and Federals — some of which are townhouses. Italianate designs, French Colonials and a few midcentury Craftsman constructions also add character to the streets. "A lot of the properties can't be torn down or renovated from the outside," says Paula Elder, a Realtor with The Brokerage who has experience in the community. "They have to follow a bunch of historic overlay guidelines." Interestingly, apartments make up most of the housing here. There are also some townhouses — some of which are newer builds that replicate the original housing styles of the 19th century — and condos. Listing prices typically range from just under $200,000 for a one-bedroom condo to $1.4 million for a midcentury townhouse with a renovated interior. Historic South Hill receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 9.Public Schools and the nearby University of Kentucky
Children can attend Harrison Elementary School, where they can take advantage of extracurriculars like African American Ballet Troupe and Girls on the Run. Students can head to Lexington Traditional Magnet School, where they can apply for the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) pathways. Both of these schools receive C-plus ratings on Niche. Students can then attend A-rated Lafayette High, Kentucky's No. 2 public high, according to Niche. It boasts the School for Creative and Performing Arts and the Pre-Engineering Program that students can apply for. For higher learning opportunities, the community is conveniently just steps away from the University of Kentucky, which U.S. World and News Report ranks in the top 100 public schools.Town Branch Commons Trail and nearby recreational spaces
Bikers and walkers alike head on the Town Branch Commons Trail, a path bordered by limestone features and native grasses. It connects the Legacy and Town Branch trails, giving locals a 22-mile route that passes by green spaces like Triangle Park. Here, people gather to challenge their friends to a game of chess or, during the winter time, spend the evening on the seasonal ice-skating rink. In summer, many head to the nearby Woodland Park, where kids let their imaginations run free on the large pirate ship play space at the center of one of the outdoor pools. Meanwhile, skaters practice their tricks at the dedicated skate space. Soon, locals will be able to enjoy their free days at the highly anticipated 10-acre Town Branch Park, which will bring everything from a dedicated space for dogs to an amphitheater to the downtown area. Some people here may spend their free days hitting the greens at the invite-only Idle Hour Country Club.Easy access to some of the city's major employers
Historic South Hill is conveniently bordered by the University of Kentucky Good Samaritan Hospital, making this neighborhood convenient for people who work there. Others may work outside of the medical field at university — the city's biggest employer. Toyota Motor Manufacturing is another of Lexington's major employers; it's under a 20-mile drive north via Interstate 75. State Route 4 circles the heart of Lexington and connects to major thoroughfares, including Versailles Road. They can take this road to the Blue Grass Airport, which is nearly 6 miles away. Some Historic South Hill residents take advantage of Lextran's public bus services.Woodland Art Fair and other popular events
Historic South Hill's location makes it so that locals are just a stone's throw away from popular events, including the Woodland Art Fair. Over 70,000 people come to this two-day August gathering to peruse the makings of all different types of artists. "The Woodland Art Fair is one of the most popular craft and art festivals in the country," says Shelby B. Lancaster, Realtor at United Real Estate Lexington. Indeed, it was voted No. 40 of the Sunshine Artist Magazine's "200 Best," which is ranked by calculating artistic profit. Other nearby popular events include the three-day June Blue Grass Music Fest and the annual Lexington Christmas Parade. Some locals gather at the monthly Historic South Hill Neighborhood Association meetings.
