Lexington neighborhood on the edge of farmland
Joyland sits on the outskirts of Lexington’s urban center and takes its name from the amusement park that once occupied much of the nearby area. While the park closed in the early 1960s, the Joyland neighborhood lives on and is known as a community of quiet convenience. Offering residents access to essential city services and sprawling farmland, homes here range from modest ranch-styles on quarter-acre lots to Traditional builds spanning multiple acres. Homes featuring larger plots of land, offer additional privacy, as well as plenty of open spaces for animals to roam. It's not uncommon here for residents to own chickens, horses, ponies, and yes, even peacocks. Catherine Perkins, vice president of the Joyland Neighborhood Association, shares a unique memory about her community, “When I first moved here, I thought it was someone yelling for help,” she quips about the birds’ distinct cries; now she knows better. Despite the occasional noise from the peacocks, overall “It’s relatively quiet," adds Garrol Finch, pastor at the Heritage Assembly of God church. "Where we live, right by the church, there’s not a whole going on around there. Even at the apartment complexes, there’s not a lot of trouble. I’d say it’s about as safe as any part of the city." Residents in Joyland also foster community through small-scale events like 5K runs or shared dinners at the neighborhood's churches.

Ranch-style houses, contemporary Traditionals and multi-acre lots
Most of Joyland's architecture consists of brick, mid-20th century ranch-style homes as well as two-story contemporary Traditional builds. Some of the ranch-styles here also feature distinct limestone exteriors common to many Lexington area neighborhoods. Houses here range in size from nearly 1,000 square feet to about 2,000 square feet with most occupying quarter-acre lots. For larger plots of land, in excess of 2 acres, buyers should look to the outskirts of Joyland. “Even a small lot here is large, comparatively speaking, to the new areas being built,” Perkins says. And while new projects have increased cut-through traffic over the years, wide streets and narrow paths spanning the neighborhood still allow for comfortable walks. “It’s a very walkable community. I used to walk quite regularly,” Perkins says. Home prices here mainly run from about $150,000 to $300,000, but a few can exceed $500,000. For those looking to rent, this community is also home to several apartment complexes.
The median home in Joyland was constructed in 1963.
