Red Mile
Heading outdoors for horse racing and golf in Red Mile
Perhaps the most unique and largest attraction of the neighborhood is Red Mile Gaming & Racing itself, which is known for harness racing, rather than thoroughbred racing. Instead of riding on the horses' backs, jockeys gear up and get ready to race down the 1-mile red clay track, while being pulled in a two-wheeled cart called a sulky. In addition to races and gambling, Red Mile is also a venue for large, city-wide events like the Railbird Festival, where world-class musical artists take the stage for two days in June. Another option for getting out and about is Picadome Golf, a public golf facility that's home to the Gay Brewer, Jr. Course. "The course was named after Gay Brewer Jr, who used to live next door in the Red Mile neighborhood, after he won the 1967 Masters Tournament," says Page. Owned by the City of Lexington, the course turns 100 years old in 2026 and features narrow fairways and small greens that provide a fun challenge for any level of golfer. There are also a few green spaces in the area for non-golfers wanting to get some fresh air. Addison Park has a playground for little ones and a large grassy field for college students to pass a frisbee or take a break from classes while laying out in the sun. Those looking to get sporty can also play basketball or tennis with some friends, or jog along the park's paved trails. Just west of Red Mile, Westover Farm is another peaceful spot where locals clear their heads while walking amongst hundred-year-old trees or watching ducks swimming in the pond.Kentucky cottages with midcentury charm and affordable pricing
Walking through Red Mile, residents will find the neighborhood to be grassy and spacious, with mature oaks cooling homes under their shady leaves and narrow stretches of woods bordering developed areas. Wide streets and quaint cul-de-sacs accommodate on-street parking, though most homes also have driveways leading to built-in garages or rear parking. In addition to apartments and student housing in the area, homes in Red Mile vary between mid-century cottages, ramblers and popular suburban styles built in the 1960s and '70s like split-levels. The average sales price for the neighborhood is $240,000, which is $100,000 dollars less than the average for the Lexington area. Two-bedroom cottages can sell for as low as $180,000, while homes with larger plans sell closer to $300,000 dollars. More expansive options with over 2,000 square feet, often built in later decades and featuring refurbished interiors, typically sell from $350,000 to $500,000 dollars. For something with less space, a smaller selection of two-to-three-bedroom townhouses can also be found lining Red Mile's streets, selling for around $170,000 dollars.Local restaurants and distilleries in Lexington
In addition to being close to some of Lexington's biggest attractions, Red Mile also has plenty of commercial areas nearby for shopping and dining. Just southeast of the neighborhood on South Broadway, residents will find a shopping plaza with several local and name-brand restaurants. First Watch is a great way to start the day with its healthy breakfast options, or folks can head over to Kentucky Sports Bar & Grille to catch up on the latest sports over beer and burgers. For other chain options, residents can also try Zaxby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings or Sir Pizza of Kentucky. Half a mile away on Alexandria Drive, a shopping center with Hispanic retail also provides flavorful alternatives. Wander into La Princesa Super Mercado to peruse their selection of international ingredients, or stop by El Sabroso for traditional Mexican eats like tacos, beans and tortas served alongside colorful murals and a family-friendly environment. Kroger can also be found right on Alexandria Drive for a more expansive selection of groceries and household necessities. On weekends, residents often head downtown to dine at popular attractions like the Distillery District on Old Frankfort Pike. Barrel House Distilling Company, Ethereal and Old Pepper Distillery all have different whiskeys and bourbons to try, while Goodfellas Pizzeria doubles as a bar and pizza joint to give folks dining options.Head to highly-rated schools in Fayette County
Families living in the Red Mile neighborhood can send their children to schools within Fayette County Public Schools. James Lane Allen Elementary School may have a C-plus grade on Niche, but it makes up for it with local church and community partnerships. Beaumont Middle School maintains an A grade on Niche, offering 20 student clubs and a required community service project for eighth graders. From there, students can attend Lafayette High School. Ranked No. 2 for Best Public High Schools in Kentucky, Lafayette has an A Niche grade, hosts the School for the Creative and Performing Arts and offers a pre-engineering program.Living near the University of Kentucky
Only three-quarters of a mile away, the University of Kentucky (UK) is a big driver for the Lexington community and economy. According to Dabney, it brings growth and culture to the area and its expansion is only projected to continue. “The University of Kentucky is a huge draw. Over the years it’s been expanding exponentially, and in this direction. So, Red Mile is a great location for students to live,” Dabney says. In addition to students, Red Mile's other residents also enjoy unparalleled access to campus events. In a town where sports take centerstage, UK's athletics are a particularly large attraction, especially with UK being the winningest collegiate basketball team of all time.Walk or ride around town
Less than two miles from downtown Lexington and UK, Red Mile is considered an extremely walkable neighborhood. “The area is also known for being bike rider-friendly,” Dabney says. There are also bus stops along Red Mile Road for those who rely on public transportation. Otherwise, people will use their own vehicles to get around. South Broadway is right next to the neighborhood for a straight shot downtown, while, Blue Grass Airport is just 5 miles west for those traveling out of state. In the case of a medical emergency, St. Joseph Hospital is also nearby, located just outside Red Mile at the end of Mason Headley Road.Crime
Red Mile receives a CAP Index crime score of 7 out of 10, which is higher than the national average, which is 4. "While this may have been true historically with Red Mile touching on areas of opportunity, it feels that way less and less nowadays," says Dabney.
