Far out into the farmlands sits the tiny, unassuming community of Libertytown. “The neighborhood has a kind of rolling countryside and isn’t highly populated,” says Nancy Bowlus, Associate Broker with RE/MAX.

Homes are built along Liberty Road, which passes through the center of town, and smaller streets that branch out like tiny tendrils. As you stray from these roads, miles of open fields begin to take shape. Ranches and bungalows are the most common home styles, featuring an average of three bedrooms. “Lot sizes go from half an acre to many acres,” explains Bowlus. One advantage Libertytown has is that it has clusters of suburb-like streets, where homes are more predictably spaced, as well as more open acreage with homes father apart. This allows home buyers to decide based on how much privacy they need. Basic townhouses or ranch styles dating as far back as the late nineteenth century start at $220,000 and gradually increase to the high $600,000s. You can find a handful of luxury estates, too, priced north of $1 million.

Kids in Libertytown attend Liberty Elementary, which earns a B from Niche and maintains a student-to-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. Niche gives Walkersville Middle an A-minus for diversity. When they reach Walkersville High, students can challenge themselves with several AP courses. The AP enrollment for kids at this school is 28%.

Libertytown Park is a spot where locals go to burn off extra energy by making use of the basketball, tennis and volleyball courts. You can play all day from April to November since the park is open until 10 pm. For a family grill, picnic, or a special celebration, reserve the picnic shelter to host your group. Those working on the park’s rehabilitation project are committed to revitalizing the surfaces of the basketball and tennis courts so that locals can play for years to come. Kids aren’t left out either, with a full playground consisting of slides, obstacles and swings.

Despite being a small rural area, Libertytown has a handful of hidden treasures that are must-sees and dos. The Widespread Country Market recently opened, where locals grab fresh meats, treats and preserves. If you’re in the mood for something even fresher, head to the Happy Cow Creamery. This locally run spot doubles as a farm, where you can spot goats and horses as you dig into a cup of classic chocolate or vanilla.

Just eleven miles down Route 26 is Downtown Frederick. “Frederick is a go-to destination for restaurants and recreation,” says Bowlus. The Downtown Frederick Partnership organizes a unique event on the first Saturday of each month to provide exposure to local businesses. Embrace the season and support your neighbors for a fun weekend. Sit and enjoy an entrée at the Tasting Room, which serves savory cuts like a rack of lamb and duck breast. Pair it with one of their fine wines or save room for a dessert. For something on the rocks, try Sidecar just down the block and explore their whiskey selection.

Libertytown may be small, but its charm is undeniable. When Friday comes, venture into Frederick for a sit-down dinner or stay home with a treat you grabbed from the market.
