Interlaken
A Northeast Libertyville subdivision
Butterfield Road runs north to south through Interlaken. To the west is Interlaken Meadows, the first of two subdivisions with winding drives and clipped lawns under a heavy tree canopy. “There’s not a lot of custom homes there,” Campbell says. “They’re more traditional, colonial homes. East of Butterfield Road, you’ll see more upscale homes built in the 80s and 90s.” These custom Interlaken Ridge properties are about as tightly packed as their counterparts across Butterfield, though they contain higher square footage and more rooms. Concrete driveways lead to brick and cedar fronts with two-car garages. Most homes across both Interlaken communities range from $550,000 to $900,000.Getting outside within the Libertyville Recreation Department
Willis Overholser and Jo Ann Eckmann parks are the neighborhood’s two pocket playgrounds. Also close to home, residents can play a round of golf at the Pine Meadow Golf Club or go fishing and birdwatching at Butler Lake. But an even larger regional park with a lake and more amenities is less than 3 miles away. Independence Grove Forest Preserve’s 1,200 acres sprawl northeast of the community, centered on a 129-acre lake that offers canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing, and ice fishing from a boathouse and marina. Eight miles of walking and six miles of biking trails surround the main lake and smaller North Bay area. The Des Plaines River Trail also enters through parts of Independence Grove; folks can pick up this trail and explore other parts of Lake County. Dog owners can let them loose in the open fields at the Independence Grove Dog Park.Heading to downtown Libertyville
Interlaken’s closest commercial neighbor is Butterfield Square Plaza, located directly north of the community where Butterfield Road intersects with Illinois Route 137. Besides a McDonald’s drive-thru, the plaza is home to Jimmy’s Charhouse, an upscale steakhouse where patrons dine at candlelit tables or a full bar. The plaza’s other anchor is Sunset Foods, the neighborhood grocer. Drivers pass more Libertyville staples on route 137; they may stop for a patio meal at Austin’s or live performance in The Fuel Room, the attached music venue. For more dining options and locally-owned shopping, downtown Libertyville’s walkable shopping strip is about 2.5 miles away. Firkin is a Libertyville staple decked out with string lights or seasonal decorations from rustic rafters that go with the Wild West-inspired interior. Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters, also settled downtown, serves coffee and other products from Wisconsin Farmers.Events on Libertyville’s Main Street
“We’ve got a great MainStreet organization if you want to be involved in the community,” says Kathy Regel, a broker associate at Baird & Warner who has lived in Libertyville for 27 years. “They do pumpkins for take, kids things like that. June to October there’s First Fridays where all the stores are open late, to get people to shop local.” Libertyville hosts several regular events celebrating the neighborhood’s business area and community, like the monthly CarFun classic car show and the Lunch in the Park event on Fridays at Cook Park. Residents over 21 can stroll store-to-store while sipping on some vino during the Wine About Winter event, or enjoy live music, brews, and traditional German dishes at Oktoberfest. The neighborhood is about a mile from the Lake Country Fairgrounds. Campbell: “They hold a lot of agriculture and earth science events.”Libertyville School District options for Interlaken residents
Kids in Interlaken attend classes with peers from throughout the Libertyville area, starting at Butterfield Elementary School, which scores an A-minus from Niche. Highland Middle School also scores an A-minus, while Libertyville High School--one of two high schools in the district, on the shores of Butler Lake--gets an A-plus. Students here can enroll in career and technical courses relating to business, family and consumer science and applied technology.Getting around Libertyville and beyond
Residents hear the sounds of train horns close to home, since the Metra passes right over Butterfield Road headed to the Libertyville Metra Station about 2 miles away. The Milwaukee District North line takes commuters the hour and 15 minutes to Chicago Union Station. Those who prefer driving that distance have a 44-mile trip in store, taking Illinois Route 137 to Interstate 94; O’Hare International Airport is at the 29-mile mark. Other essentials are much closer to home within the Libertyville area, like Advocate Condell Medical Center and its satellite healthcare facilities near downtown Libertyville.
