Golfing in spring, swimming in summer, hiking in fall and skiing in winter — outdoor recreation never stops in western Pennsylvania's Ligonier Township. "There's so much to do here, and every day feels like the weekend," says Misty Hegan, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway, who grew up in the township. Despite its rural landscape, Ligonier's small-town charm, country club amenities and serene state parks keep neighbors busy and connected throughout the year.
When finding a home here, you'll have plenty of options across the township's 92 square miles. If you're looking for land, spacious country homes with acreage provide privacy and room for farming operations. Two-story Craftsman-inspired homes with covered front porches sit far from the main road, and a thick border of pines and oaks keeps the neighbors out of view. Some residential streets in compact boroughs like Laughlintown may include sidewalks, but don't expect much more than a gravel drive in the more secluded areas.
For most three-bedroom, single-family homes, buyers can expect prices in the $150,000 to $350,000 range, but larger options are also available. "Our tax rates are low compared to the surrounding area, so people often come here to build," Hegan says. You might come across a million-dollar estate on 20 acres or a custom chateau with seven bedrooms and a private pond. Regardless of the price, you'll be surrounded by outdoor recreation options that will keep you active all year.
In spring, break out your clubs and book a tee time at one of the nearby golf courses — keep in mind that you might need a membership to enjoy everything these clubs offer. Ligonier Country Club, Laurel Valley Golf Club and Rolling Rock Club are all renowned for their private golfing experience, and Champion Lakes Golf Course & Resort is popular for its public course and cozy lodging. As the summer heat rolls in, snag tickets to Idlewild & SoakZone, a premier water and amusement park only 3 miles from the center of town. Fall is the best time to hike in Linn Run State Park, a 600-acre expanse that borders Forbes State Forest and includes camping areas, waterfalls and a well-stocked trout stream. And after the first big snow, head to Laurel Mountain State Park for some downhill skiing.
Hegan also highlights the community's local events, which range from outdoor concerts to holiday light shows. Fort Ligonier Days bring the township together to celebrate with a parade and local vendors, and neighbors often gather at The Diamond, Ligonier borough's informal town square. Right down the street, you can sign up for group fitness classes at the Ligonier Valley YMCA or take the kids for a playdate at Friendship Park, which features a vibrant playscape and a picnic shelter. And on Saturdays, stop by the Ligonier Country Market to pick up fresh produce from nearby farmers.
During the week, students in Ligonier can attend Mellon Elementary School, Ligonier Valley Middle School and Ligonier Valley High School, which all maintain grades of C-plus or better on Niche. In high school, the senior internship program connects students with local organizations and businesses, such as the Fort Ligonier Historical Site and Museum. Students interested in health care will find internship opportunities at Excela Health Latrobe Hospital, just 15 miles away.
Ligonier Township may be rural, but that doesn't mean it lacks dining options. "One of Ligonier's best-kept secrets is The Gray Goose. It has beautiful views of a huge pond, and you can see the swans from the bar," Hegan says. This upscale American eatery sits just off Lincoln Highway, about 2 miles from the Giant Eagle Supermarket. Local buses also run along this main artery, but a car will make the 50-mile trip from downtown Pittsburgh go by much faster, leaving you more time to explore the recreation options in Ligonier Township.
