Things to do and see amid a small-town vibe

Lima’s Lakewood West neighborhood only partially lives up to its name; although 2 miles west of the city center, there’s no lake in sight. “We do have theater, arts and new businesses,” says Realtor Veronica Fox of Superior Plus Realtors. “It’s very special and very different.” Lima residents have no trouble filling their weekends with events. Nearby restaurants highlight that small-town sort of walkability. The community’s price range gives potential buyers several options for settling down, whether it’s a turn-key property or a fixer-upper needing some elbow grease.

Events are a cornerstone of life in Lima

Lakewood West’s charm is something shared by greater Lima, and that is the city’s community-based events. Residents of all ages and interests can find something to do year-round, rain or shine. “The Lima Civic Center has stuff coming in like 'Shrek the Musical,' ” says Realtor Sheila Custer of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. Residents wanting to compete alongside their neighbors are in for an explosive holiday. “There’s the July 4th 5k run; that’s just a family thing we do,” says Custer.

This community has a variety of housing styles

The residential streets of Lakewood West hold few surprises, forming a suburban patchwork. While there are few sidewalks, prospective buyers can count on finding a home with a private driveway and attached garage. A variety of home types can be found, including Cape Cods, split-levels and ranch styles. Home prices creep a bit higher on this side of town, with most three- and four-bedroom homes fetching between $150,000 and $300,000. Of course, there are outliers, with fixer-uppers selling for as low as $35,000 and, conversely, multi-building investment properties reaching $1.5 million. Whether large or small, cheap or pricey, these homes are only a mile and a half away from Route 81 at most.

Residents can get a fair amount of shopping done and a bite to eat around the aptly named Market Street. Locally owned restaurants are the norm here, be it the end-of-the-work-week vibe of Beer Barrel Pizza & Grill or the rustic outdoor seating of the Old Barn Restaurant & Grill. Wastewater in Lima

Although Lima has little to no risk of natural disasters, the city did have an issue with wastewater 10 years ago. As part of a settlement in 2014 with the federal government over sewage releases into the Ottawa River, the city more than doubled its wastewater treatment capacity. It also removed and replaced affected trees along the river. All this work cost some $147 million over 10 years. In 2022, the Ohio Water Development Authority granted the city $5.82 million to aid its wastewater treatment efforts.
