On numbered streets, sandwiched between industrial sites to the south, east and west, the southside Lima neighborhood of Northwest Perry Township stands as a green slice of life for its residents. Larger lots than those in neighborhoods closer to downtown set this neighborhood apart, leading to homes spaced farther apart than the city's urban norm. Likewise, trees dot most every block, though sidewalks are not part of the streetscape.
Less than a mile from the ramps to Interstate 75, which leads directly to Dayton to the south and Toledo to the north, Northwest Perry Township is connected to Ohio's broader economy. “There are things in Lima that, when you look at them . . . we have the intersections of the world here,” says Realtor Sheila Custer of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. “All the interstates have manufacturing ties to them.”
Those closer-to-home manufacturers and fabricators within view of the neighborhood are a point of pride, Custer says, so much so that students are exposed to employment opportunities there in high school. “Maker Fest is where we bring all the factories together, and we let the kids touch and feel to see what’s in there,'' she says. "The workers get to talk to them.” The city has held this annual, two-day fair since 2015, with 2023 bringing in more than 1,300 students to explore various healthcare, manufacturing and skill-based trades.

Wastewater in Lima
Lima isn’t known for environmental disasters like flooding or fires, but it did have an issue with wastewater in 2014. The city and federal government settled over sewage releases into the Ottawa River. Afterward, the city more than doubled its wastewater treatment capacity while also removing and replacing affected trees along the river. The work cost an estimated $147 million over 10 years. In 2022, the Ohio Water Development Authority granted the city $5.82 million toward its wastewater treatment plant.
