Classic midcentury suburbs feature homes close to public schools
Northeast of Lincoln’s city center, Bethany is a nearly all-residential neighborhood with about 7,700 residents. Comprised mostly of homes built throughout the 20th century, Josh Beyer, Realtor and owner of Capital City Realty Group says features, “such as hardwood floors, glass block bathroom windows, finished basements and stained-glass windows” are found in many homes. The quiet and peaceful neighborhood has become popular with commuters to Lincoln, 5 miles away, but also Omaha, about 60 miles in the northeast.
Bethany is ideal for first-time homebuyers
Yards are tidy and manageable in size, and many offer detached one- and two-car garages. Most homes range from about 1,000 to 2,700 square feet with three bedrooms or less. Among the prevalent styles are cottages from the 1920s, bungalows from the 1930s, ranch-style homes from the 1950s, and Colonial-style homes from the 1980s. Prices range from about $200,000 to $350,000. Many homes feature updated interiors. At the same time, buyers who like to add their own touches will find a range of fixer-uppers. “Buyers like the sense of history and preservation that you can’t miss in Bethany,’’ Beyer said, adding schools within walking distance also draw much attention.
Bethany is home to the best public school district in Lancaster County
According to Niche, Lincoln Public Schools is the No. 1 best school district in Lancaster County, which gives the district an A-minus. It ranks in the top 10 Lincoln school districts for diversity, athletics and academics. According to Realtor Matt Kirkland, a Lincoln realtor for more than 20 years and the owner of Giving Realty, “Parents in Bethany are proud of the public schools, and many parents are alumni, so there’s a strong loyalty factor here.”
Niche ranks Kahoa Elementary as the 10th best public elementary school in Lincoln and gives it an A-minus grade. Located on Leighton Avenue, it sits right next to Jaycee-Kahoa Park. Mickle Middle has an A-minus grade from Niche. It is ranked the sixth best public middle school in Lincoln. Mickle students enjoy outdoor classes in adjacent Tyrrell Park. Lincoln Northeast High has a B-minus grade from Niche. Since its founding in 1941, the Rockets have won multiple state championships in basketball, football, gymnastics and volleyball.
Well-loved parks reflect city investment and neighborhood pride
According to The Trust for Public Land, about 89% of Lincoln’s population is about a 10-minute walk to a city park, which holds true for about half the Bethany neighborhood. In the northwest corner, Tyrrell Park’s 12 acres serve as a learning opportunity for students, where they experience firsthand efforts to preserve prairie grass. Jaycee-Kahoa Park, located near the center of the neighborhood about 1.5 miles from the farthest point, is more recreational, offering beach volleyball courts, playground facilities, and newly paved hiking and biking trails. Mahoney Park is just outside Bethany's north edge and is one of the 20 largest parks in Lincoln. It welcomes Bethany residents with an 18-hole golf course, baseball and soccer fields and a modern playground with rubberized padding.
Long-standing fast food favorites, coffee shops and a notable bakery thrive in Bethany
Bethany is almost entirely a residential neighborhood, but its cafes and fast food spots are popular and long-standing. Taco John’s has offered Mexican-style fast food since 1969 and has three locations near Leighton Avenue. Known for its Classic Crispy Tacos, drive-through and table service, it claims to be the creator of the moniker “Taco Tuesdays.” Casey’s, at Leighton Avenue and Cotner Boulevard, is a Midwest chain gas station and pizza joint in one. HyVee grocery store is right next to Caribou Coffee on Holdrege Street. The Front Porch, on Adams Street, is a coffee shop and an indoor play space for pre-school-age kids. It offers sandwiches, smoothies and kid-friendly snacks.
Historic Cotner Boulevard runs from the Capital northeast through Bethany and offers popular small businesses, including Say Do Say Pottery Studio, Let’s Talk Bowling sporting goods store and Backtrack Records. Gratitude Café & Bakery and Groovy Guru Granola share the same address and mission to provide organic and fair-trade café foods and drinks.
Cornhusker football leads the way in event-savvy Lincoln
Bethany residents are within a 10-mile drive of almost any event they want to enjoy in the city, from classic car shows and ice skating competitions to marathons and concerts at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Multi-purpose PBA was completed in 2013 and is the home of the University of Nebraska’s men’s and women’s basketball teams. With a capacity of 15,000, PBA has recently hosted Michael Buble, Metallica, Blake Shelton and George Strait.
Memorial Stadium is the home of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers and their 85,000 fans, known as The Red Sea. Fans celebrate or commiserate along the streets of Haymarket, the downtown district that surrounds the stadium, after home games.
Environmentally friendly public buses serve Bethany
Car travel is the most popular mode of transportation. While there are no commuter trains, StarTran is the city’s bus system, with 18 routes across the city. Running on compressed natural gas (CNG), StarTran has gained attention for reducing maintenance and fuel costs for the city. Bethany is about nine miles from Lincoln’s airport.
