Bethany is a quiet corner of Lincoln with a convenient location

In Bethany, serene streets snake through a section of northeast Lincoln, lined with homes for about as far as the eye can see. This neighborhood offers a location largely removed from the hubbub of downtown and the University of Lincoln. Still, many residents are within walking distance of multiple parks and schools and are less than a 10-minute drive from a lot of the amenities on the city’s O Street corridor, including the sizable Gateway Mall.

Homes vary in age, but offer similar styles

Bethany draws you in with its mature trees and cohesive feel, and the homes here share many similar features like wood or vinyl exteriors. Ranch, bungalow and split-level styles are common. Residents get a suburban-like atmosphere, complete with sidewalks and properties set back from the road with space for front lawns. Single-family houses in Bethany range from the mid-$100,000s to the upper $400,000s, depending on factors such as age and square footage. The neighborhood also has a few townhomes priced from the low $200,000s to low $400,000s, and condos from the low $80,000s to low $100,000s. “It’s probably a much overlooked community in terms of overall price per bedroom, price per bathroom,” says local Realtor Randy Ralston, who’s with Nebraska Realty and has been selling homes for six years. “The price points on the houses, I think, are really, really reasonable for what you get in Lincoln. You’re still five minutes, 10 minutes from everything you need.”

Close-by schools offer activities from karate to basketball

The Lincoln Public Schools system is top-rated and offers school choice options through magnet programs and open enrollment. However, much of Bethany is zoned to the top-rated Kahoa Elementary School, which is smack dab in the middle of the neighborhood, with an active Parent-Teacher Organization that supports activities ranging from an after-school karate workshop to a science fair. The highly rated Robin Mickle Middle School is also part of the neighborhood and offers intramural sports. “Parents in Bethany are proud of the public schools, and many parents are alumni, so there’s a strong loyalty factor here,” says Matt Kirkland, who’s the owner of The Matt Kirkland Group and Giving Realty, with about two decades of selling real estate.

Bethany residents have easy access to parks big and small

When you want to get outdoors, you can take a stroll or a quick bike ride to places like Jaycee-Kahoa Park, a 6-acre spot featuring a playground, a sand volleyball court and a picnic pavilion. Some in Bethany are closer to the roughly 13-acre Tyrell Park, which has a ball diamond and tennis courts. More opportunities for play and adventure are available. Just north of the neighborhood is the 77-acre Mahoney Park, where you can play a round on the 18-hole golf course, tone up at the fitness station or take your dog to play in the fenced dog run.

Go shopping or fill up on food close to home

There’s a Walmart Supercenter around the corner from Bethany, off 85th Street, but residents are also a short drive from O Street, one of Lincoln’s prime commercial corridors. “The best shopping is in either that corridor, where you’re right at 66th and O, or all the way southeast, or you have to go halfway to Omaha,” Ralston says. The Gateway Mall anchors this stretch, right off the intersection of 66th and O streets. It’s the largest shopping center in the city and has over 100 stores, with Dillard’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Burlington and JCPenney. Down the road from the mall, you'll find Super Saver and Hy-Vee grocery stores, as well as a Target. There are plenty of restaurants, too, including:

  • Honest Abe’s, part of a Lincoln chain known for its burgers, seasoned “Freedom Fries” and shakes
  • Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant, with a reputation for large portions, from entrees to margaritas
  • Cooks Café, a breakfast hot spot with plate-sized pancakes

The city's core is not too far by car

As secluded as Bethany is from Downtown Lincoln, it’s still only about a 6-mile drive away using Vine Street. The same goes for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, whose City Campus is adjacent to downtown. Lincoln Airport is about 8 miles from Bethany and has direct flights to cities including Chicago and Denver, though people often make the almost 60-mile drive to Omaha to fly out of the larger Eppley Airfield. StarTran bus stops are available in the neighborhood, too.
