One of Lincoln's first suburban neighborhoods continues to thrive in south Lincoln
Founded in 1903, Lincoln Country Club was the main social attraction for residents of the highly coveted neighborhood that shares its name. It still is today. “Many residents of the Country Club neighborhood are members of the club, which makes living here so easy. If you’re social and you love golf or tennis, and perhaps if you have young children, being within walking distance of the club makes life that much more fun and easy,” says Realtor Matt Kirkland, Owner of Giving Realty and a real estate agent in Lincoln for more than 20 years. “But even if you’re not a member, this neighborhood is one of the most coveted places to live in Lincoln. Homes aren’t massive or overly ostentatious, but they are well-built, well-maintained and well-loved. The neighborhood offers so much from top schools, and well-appointed parks to a hard-working Neighborhood Association. Many residents are actively involved preserving the beauty of the community and it really shows.”
The neighborhood’s landscape architect also designed Pioneer’s Park and the Nebraska State Capitol grounds. Country Club was one of the first neighborhoods in the United States to introduce winding streets and meandering boulevards instead of commonly practiced grid layouts. While quiet, pretty and suburban, Country Club is just three miles from downtown Lincoln. Homes were built in every decade of the 20th century. Most are well-updated or fully renovated, featuring well-tended gardens, neatly trimmed lawns, and majestic hardwood trees. The architectural variety from home to home and street to street draws buyers who want authentic designs and nothing approaching cookie-cutter.
Homes were built in every decade of the 20th century in Country Club
Homes in Country Club feature a wide range of 20th-century home styles, including Cape Cod, Tudor, mid-century ranch-style homes, and split-levels. With an average recently sold price of $430,000, most homes offer three to four bedrooms. Many homes are recently renovated. Investment buyers can find a handful of properties from around 1900 that have been renovated into duplexes.
Buyers can find pristine two-bedroom ranch-style homes from the 1940s that have recently sold from about $340,000 to $400,000. Tudor-style homes with three to five bedrooms have recently sold from about $680,000 to $710,000.
Lincoln Public Schools is the No. 1 best school district in Lancaster County
According to Niche, A-minus rated Lincoln Public Schools as the No. 1 best school district in Lancaster County. It ranks in the top ten Lincoln school districts for diversity, athletics and academics. According to Realtor Kirkland, “Lincoln Public Schools have been around for generations. Parents are proud of the public schools in the city, and many are alumni, so there’s a strong loyalty factor here.”
Students attend Sheridan Elementary, which has an A-minus grade from Niche and is located in the center of the neighborhood on Plymouth Avenue. It is the only public school within the neighborhood boundaries. Irving Middle has an A-minus grade from Niche and an enviable student-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. It is located just outside the western edge of the neighborhood. Lincoln Southeast High, just east of the neighborhood, also earns an A-minus grade from Niche and is rated the third-best public high school in Lincoln by Niche. They have high proficiency scores and offer programs for gifted students and Advanced Placement classes.
Parks and The Country Club of Lincoln show off the landscapes of the neighborhood
Bishop Heights Park features seven acres with a sizeable sand-covered playground, picnic tables and plenty of green space. Pocras Park is less than an acre, but its extensive landscaping and metal sculptures welcome residents to explore. The playground is roomy and is lined with rubber matting. Its gazebo reflects metalwork from the late 1800s, when the park was founded and its tall hardwood trees offer plenty of shade.
The Country Club of Lincoln was founded in 1903 and was the first country club in the greater Lincoln area. With 65 acres and an 18-hole championship golf course, it occupies about one-sixth of the neighborhood. The club also offers dining options, tennis, a fitness center and an outdoor swimming pool that stays open, weather permitting, during the warm weeks after Labor Day. Realtor Kirkland says, “People who live here and who have joined The Country Club of Lincoln have the best of both worlds. A home in a desirable, welcoming neighborhood, and a built-in social life with friends who are often your neighbors.”
The Rock Island Trail is a one-of-a-kind 7-mile bike path that winds from Country Club right into downtown Lincoln. Realtor Kirkland says, “It’s more than a great bike path – it’s a city connector. My friends, family and neighbors ride it all the time. It links one park to the next and it links nearby neighborhoods to each other.”
The Country Club Neighborhood Association organizes events year-round
The Country Club Neighborhood Association is dedicated to preserving the community's look and feel. It leads projects such as the renovation of Pocras Park, ongoing tree plantings, boulevard clean-up efforts and the installation of historic street lights. The association also hosts historic walking tours, an annual garage sale, a back-to-school swim party and numerous social events. On the first Sunday in May, the association assembles between mile three and mile four of The Lincoln Marathon & Half Marathon to cheer on runners and hand out water and Gatorade.
Hospitality, history and home-style cooking are found in Country Club
Lila Mae’s Southern Kitchen & Lounge is a notably family-friendly spot known for its fried pickles, collard greens and Nashville hot chicken cheese fries. It has developed a loyal following since opening in 2022. It offers creative cocktails, and the kids' menu gets high praise from picky patrons. It’s also built a solid catering arm. Butterfly Bakery is known for its creatively decorated cakes, pastries and cookies. Grapevine, a long-standing neighborhood bar, is “the centerpiece of the neighborhood for casual get-togethers. The owner, Travis, is a great guy and highly respected,” says Realtor Kirkland. Leon’s Gourmet Grocer specializes in high-quality foods, prepared meals and competitive prices.
Residents will see road improvements in 2024
Several streets will enjoy significant improvements in 2024. Notable enhancements include repaving and widening of Bradfield Drive from Sheridan Boulevard to South Street and Rathbone Road from Van Dorn Street to Plymouth Avenue. Residents can take Uber, taxis, shuttles and limousines to and from Lincoln Airport or venues around the city. Drivers can make the trip in less than 15 minutes via Rosa Parks Way.
