Cripple Creek is a quiet, convenient south-central Lincoln community
South-central Lincoln’s Cripple Creek is a quiet, tree-filled community surrounding a public park and a highly rated elementary school. “Cripple Creek was and still is a premier neighborhood in Lincoln,” says Realtor Jeff Searcy of Home Real Estate’s The Searcy Team, who has about 50 years of experience. He says much of the area was developed in the 1990s, when this part of Lincoln was considered the outskirts. “Of course, now, the capital city has expanded miles past the neighborhood, with many city services nearby.”
Realtor Beth Scholz of Nebraska Realty, who has over 30 years of experience, says today’s homebuyers are drawn to Cripple Creek’s proximity to those amenities, including the Nebraska Parkway commercial corridor. “It’s an older, more established neighborhood, so you have more trees. And if you don’t want to leave, you never have to. You’re two or three blocks from everything, shopping, local bars, everything.”
A mix of home styles selling for below the national median
Cripple Creek has an eclectic mix of New Traditionals, Colonial Revivals, split-levels and ranch-style homes. Many have attached two-car garages and driveways with basketball hoops. Elms, oaks and maples shade neatly edged sidewalks throughout the neighborhood. Single-family home prices start close to $225,000 and rise to about $540,000. Townhomes, including standalone ranch-style townhomes in the Aspen Addition community, typically sell for between about $180,000 and $450,000. Cripple Creek’s median home price hovers close to $390,000, below the national median of about $420,000 reported by the National Association of Realtors.
Beal Slough, a wetland area on the east side of the neighborhood, poses minimal flood risk. Lincoln is vulnerable to tornadoes.
Highly rated Lincoln Public Schools
Lincoln Public Schools, which earns an A-minus from Niche, allows in- and out-of-district transfers by application. Cripple Creek is zoned to Humann Elementary, Pound Middle and Southeast High, all of which get A-minuses from Niche. High schoolers may take dual-credit classes at Southeast Community College and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. St. Peter’s Catholic School (not rated) is a private elementary and middle school affiliated with St. Peter Catholic Church, on the north side of the neighborhood.
Cripple Creek Park, Country View Park and other outdoor recreation
Cripple Creek Park, next to Humann Elementary, has a playground, baseball diamond and a sand volleyball court, among other outdoor recreational amenities. It’s within a mile of most homes, in the heart of the neighborhood. Country View Park, on the south side, has a playground and picnic areas. The Beal Slough Greenway, also nearby, has a ballfield and an 18-hole disc golf course.
Nebraska Parkway, SouthPointe Pavilions shopping and dining options
For groceries, there’s a Super Saver near the corner of 56th Street and the Nebraska Parkway. It’s close to a Target, an AutoZone and a slew of restaurants, including 7 Brew Coffee, Taco John’s and the Mettle Grill, a popular American eatery. Scholz recommends Lazlo’s Brewery & Grill, a casual pub-style spot. “It’s usually packed on the weekends, it’s excellent. You can order just about anything there, and it’s more in the mid-range in terms of prices.” The walkable, outdoor SouthPointe Pavilions mall is a couple of miles west down Pine Lake Road. It’s filled with upscale retailers, including Von Maur, lululemon and White House Black Market.
