Tree-lined streets and easy access to shopping and dining in Culler

The main highlights of the Culler neighborhood are its mix of housing and its convenience to dining and shopping locations such as the Gateway Mall. The northern end of the community is lined with mature trees and has a wide variety of homes. The southern half features a range of retailers and chain restaurants along O Street. Culler is also within commuting distance to Lincoln’s downtown and adjacent to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus. “It’s a good part of town,” says Jeff Chapelle, a Realtor with Woods Bros Realty who grew up near Culler. "I live in the area, it's home. You’re close to everything, and Lincoln is good for getting around at any time of the day.”

A variety of housing styles, with smaller lots and older homes

Homes in Culler include ranch-style houses, cottages, Craftsmans and split-levels. Multifamily units, including duplexes, townhomes and apartments, are also present. Single-family homes can range from $150,000 to $300,000. "You are going to find a single-stall garage and middle-class homes in that area," Chapelle says. "And you’re finding homes dating from the late 1940s through the '70s — not much new has been built." He notes that Culler has “good starter homes.” HOAs are rare in the community.

Properties are typically located on gridded streets with smaller lots and oak trees accenting the lawns. Sidewalks are also common. Maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency do show a slight flooding risk along Deadman’s Run. “All the homes have basements,” Chapelle says. "When you get to Vine Street and O Street, there is flood-controlled drainage through there."

Close to Gateway Mall and big-box retail

Most shopping destinations are along O Street or 48th Street, including multiple big-box retailers such as Target and T.J. Maxx and grocery stores such as Hy-Vee, Fresh International Market and Super Saver. The Gateway Mall on the corner of 66th and O streets has multiple restaurants and department stores, including Dillard’s and JCPenney, and it's also an active gathering spot for Lincolnites. “We only have two malls in the city of Lincoln, and [The Gateway Mall] is a totally enclosed mall. You’ll see a lot of seniors walking," Chapelle says. "The doctors around here even hand out maps to Gateway, saying, ‘Do this lap, here’s 1 mile, follow this route through the mall and get your steps in.’ It’s alive, good restaurants around it, and they're always getting new stores in.”

Restaurants can be found on O Street, 48th Street or 66th Street, and they include various chains and some locally owned spots. Kelli’s Pub has a happy hour and pool leagues, while Tea Vibe serves bubble tea and baked goods. Chef Shawarma offers Mediterranean fare.

Public and private school options

Students can start at Riley Elementary, graded B on Niche, before continuing to the C-plus-rated Culler Middle. Lincoln Northeast High earns a C and offers computer science and culinary arts classes. The Nebraska Department of Education allows for enrollment in a different public school district via application. Private religious schools are also in the neighborhood, including Lincoln Lutheran Middle/High School, which has a B from Niche. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus is directly northwest.

Bethany Park and the MoPac trail anchor Culler’s outdoor recreation

Green spaces include Bethany Park, featuring a disc golf course, a playground and a picnic shelter. The 22-mile-long MoPac trail also cuts through Culler, with an entrance on the corner of Vine Street and Cotner Boulevard.

East Park Plaza on 66th has a cinema, while Hollywood Bowl on 48th offers leagues and can be rented out for parties. The mall houses another bowling alley, which has an arcade, too.

StarTran runs multiple bus routes through Culler

StarTran provides connections through Culler with multiple stops for the No. 48 and No. 44 buses throughout. Lincoln Airport is roughly 6 miles west, while downtown is about 3 miles in the same direction on O Street. The neighborhood has several medical clinics, while CHI St. Elizabeth Hospital is 2 miles southeast.
