One-of-a-kind Hawley receives praise and recognition for community commitment
Hawley is a historically African-American neighborhood rooted in the history of Lincoln. With collaboration from city government, residents and the public agency NeighborWorks Lincoln, Hawley has increased the supply of affordable housing without pushing longtime residents out of the neighborhood. It has also benefitted from work by the city and University of Nebraska-Lincoln to redirect and better manage floodplains by creating The Antelope Valley Project. As Lincoln's largest public works project, it combines flood control, economic development, transportation, and community revitalization into one project in and around Hawley.
According to Matt Kirkland, owner of Giving Realty and a Lincoln real estate agent for more than 20 years, “Hawley is a great example of how urban neighborhoods can improve and thrive by creating a balance between old and new, historic and modern, and single-family and rental properties. Residents here are super dedicated and hard-working. They work closely with the city and non-profit organizations to do what it takes to keep this community thriving.”

Cottages, duplexes and townhouses of varying ages are found in Hawley
Some of Hawley's 330 homes date back more than a century, though land-use changes during the 1950s and ‘60s, along with public and private redevelopment efforts in the 21st century, brought newer homes and townhouses to market About a third of the neighborhood's buildings are single-family homes, and about 44% are apartments. Commercial buildings occupy the rest of the space, including university facilities such as the UNL Children’s Center.
Recently remodeled cottages from 1905 have sold for about $180,000 to $200,000. Ready-to-renovate two-story duplexes from 1915 have sold for $180,000 to $250,000. Recently built two-story townhouses have sold for about $240,000 to $300,000.
Hawley gained unexpected fame during the COVID-19 pandemic when one resident dug up his back yard to plant vegetables. His neighbors, also facing food shortages and unemployment, followed suit as did others who just wanted to stay busy and productive. The so-called Hawley Hamlet was born. Residents shared what they had and received what they needed. Today, media outlets across the country continue to follow the story of this urban community that came together in crisis and changed their neighborhood for the better.
