Lincoln’s first settlers built their homes in South Salt Creek
Before Lincoln was settled around 1856, Plains Indians lived and hunted along Salt Creek, an ancient tributary of the Platte River. When European settlers arrived, many believed salt mining, with the benefit of newly built cross-country railroads, would make them wildly prosperous. However, startup costs and conflicts with political leaders in Nebraska watered down these early dreams.
The floodplain land along Salt Creek was inexpensive, so these settlers adjusted their dreams, built tiny homes and worked on emerging railroads until they saved enough to buy farms.
Today, South Salt Creek offers a mix of tiny cottages and bungalows built before 1900 and two-story homes from 1900 - 1920. Many reflect the lean times of those early days of Lincoln. One and two-bedroom homes are common. Observant buyers will find narrow lots, summer kitchens, chicken coops, and small barns. Residents include first-time homebuyers, renters and investors who enjoy renovating old homes. According to Realtor Matt Kirkland, the owner of Giving Realty and a real estate agent in Lincoln for over 20 years, “South Salt Creek attracts investors and homebuyers who want to live close to where they work. Staff and faculty from (University of Nebraska) also find this area ideal. They can bike to work, and everything they need from dining, shopping and cultural destinations are nearby.”
