Homes inside a park and arboretum enjoy a sylvan setting in East Lincoln

For three dozen or so residents of Taylor Park, the line between back yard and the park with the same name can be hard to spot. The 20-acre greenspace, designated an arboretum, adjoins properties along two main roads, allowing out-the-back-door access to walking paths, an assortment of trees and gardens, and green space. For everyone else, the walk or bike ride may be a little longer, but the experience getting there along woodsy streets is very much the same.

Established in the 1960s with a donation from longtime Lincoln landholders, Taylor Park was designed to be the center of a neighborhood of new homes that grew up around it. Four miles from Downtown, Taylor Park is surrounded by highly graded public schools, nearby shopping and peaceful, sidewalk-lined streets and cul-de-sacs. The attraction of an idyllic setting is strong. Homes sell quickly here, often in less than a week.

Midcentury and New Traditional homes are a short walk to the park

Mid-20th century one- and two-story homes are the prevalent style, owing to its history as a community planned in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. Families with school-age children are one-half a mile from Eastridge Elementary. “It’s hard to beat the walkability of Taylor Park,” says Saul Bakewell, Realtor with Nebraska Realtor and a real estate agent for more than 10 years.

Split-level homes from the 1960s have recently sold for between $260,000 and $325,000. Two-story brick homes from the 1980s have recently sold for between $335,00 and $450,000. New Traditional homes are found in the subdivisions of Taylor Greens and Taylor Meadows, where homes have recently sold from about $410,000 to $650,000.

City-owned Taylor Park features an arboretum and old apple trees

Taylor Park’s 20 acres occupy about one-quarter of the community. Bisected by a stream that runs from south to north, apple trees that grew when the land was a farm were part of the donation and are a favorite resting spot for local hawks, says Jamie Granquist, Lincoln Parks & Recs Office Specialist. The park contains more than 200 trees and is part of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Taylor Park Partners — an organization made up of arboretum and park staff, neighbors, and representatives from local schools — works to enhance the park through landscape design and plantings. They also clean up and make repairs to the park after winter ice and summer storm damage.

State festivals and the Nebraska State Capitol offer endless events

The Nebraska State Capitol is not only fascinating for historians and architecture fans but also a great place to learn more about the 37th state. Attending Supreme Court sessions and taking tours of the eight-sided Memorial Chamber are essential for all Lincolnites. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city and see their neighborhood from the 14th-floor observation desk.
