Rural farm town with lots of longtime locals

Romney is a rural, unincorporated community where locals tend to settle for a long time. Even when they move away, friends like to keep in touch. "We have a Facebook page where people who have moved away will sometimes post a message," says Rita Southern, co-owner of Southern Crossroads, a used car dealership in town. Surrounded by corn fields south of Lafayette, it's an active community with a fire department that depends on local volunteers. Though farmhouses are separated by large plots of land, church cookouts and other events bring the community together. A toy shop, barber salon and other small businesses anchor the community on the main street. For what it lacks in shops and restaurants, the community is tucked between two urban centers: Lafayette and Crawfordsville.

New park amenities in town

The town invests in green spaces for its residents. Within the past five years, it added new amenities to the community park, located on the foundation of an old school. The park has a covered patio with benches, a basketball court with two nets and a little free library. Camping is a popular weekend activity. Several state parks have campsites less than 40 miles away including Turkey Run, Prophetstown and Shades.

Farmhouses on large plots of land

Houses here are built for farm living. Single-family homes surround the main north-south thoroughfare. The area is dotted by farmhouse architecture from around 1900, with distinctive white wood paneling and the occasional wrap-around porch. Saltbox, Colonial, log cabins and ranch houses are also found throughout the area. Properties range in size from half an acre to over two acres. Long driveways create some separation from the street. With the added land, some include outbuildings like barns and storage sheds. Prices may range from $160,000 for a ranch on half an acre to $390,000 for a Colonial on 21 acres.

Hayrides and pumpkin decorating at the Halloween Party

Town events are where neighbors can catch up with their neighbors. Romney United Methodist Church hosts events throughout the year. The Holiday Bazaar has a selection of homemade crafts and Christmas décor. The well-attended Halloween Party has hayrides, pumpkin decorating and games for the kids. "It's a nice time to see people you haven’t seen in quite some time," Southern says. "Some people who used to live in Romney will come back for the events."

A few essentials in Romney, the rest in Lafayette

In a pinch, Romney has a few of the basics. Shelf-stable foods and home supplies are available at Dollar General. Restaurante Mexican El Paso is one of only two places for a bite to eat. Operating from breakfast to dinner, it offers inside seating and flavorful bites like arroz con pollo and carne asada. On the south side of Lafayette, Legacy Pub is a casual spot to catch the Purdue game with a beer and a barbecue pork sandwich. Walmart Supercenter is also on Lafayette's south side, with a full selection of groceries.
