U.S. Route 220 cuts through an otherwise rural township
Woodward is the first township drivers encounter as they drive west out of Williamsport and into the countryside. U.S. Route 220 through the neighborhood is a popular commuter road, but outside of this thoroughfare, Woodward's landscape quickly turns into the sparsely populated farmland characteristic of many Lycoming County townships. "It's a neat little hometown where everyone pretty much knows everybody," says Robby Robinson, owner of Henry's Bar-B-Q in Woodward. "It's a local place, but we get a lot of travelers and transient people going from Lock Haven to Williamsport." Travelers, commuters and residents alike enjoy Woodward's hills dotted with farms that look south toward the West Branch Susquehanna River and Allegheny Mountains.

Local barbecue and dining on the river
Dunkin', Sheetz and Dollar General are just off US-220. "We call the Dollar General the Linden Walmart. They pop up like mushrooms," Robinson says. Also on the road is 220 Eatery, which has a hot bar with prepared foods and a gas station. Henry's Bar-B-Q is a community mainstay in the area that serves pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, and wings with fries and milkshakes. The restaurant's cozy interior has simple furnishings and brick and wood-paneled walls. Antlers on the Water is a relaxed hangout spot with a patio overlooking the West Branch Susquehanna River. Diners can take in river views and listen to live music at the restaurant while eating American and seafood dishes.
Other facilities and institutions in Woodward include the Woodward Township Volunteer Fire station, Victory Baptist Church, Lycoming Christian Church, a post office and Williamsport Grandview Hotel. For more groceries, Weis in Jersey Shore Township is about 9 miles west, and Aldi in Williamsport is 7 miles east.

Homes on acres with more development along Route 220
Winding roads bordered by woods open up to views of corn fields, rolling meadows and mountains in the near distance. Some properties sit on farms or acres of land, with more isolated homes tucked away behind long driveways in the woods.
That said, most of the properties in the township are clustered around Route 220. Traditional style homes and ranches sell for between $150,000 and $250,000, and many of these homes are in Linden, an unincorporated community with a few dozen houses just south of the highway. Harvest Moon Mobile Home Park and Carpenter Park have manufactured homes off Route 220 too.

Views of the Allegheny Mountains and West Branch Susquehanna River
Locals can drop down their kayak, wade in or walk along the riverbank at the Linden PFBC Access and Boat Ramp on the township's eastern side. From the access, visitors can see the wide, meandering river and mountains just across the bank as boats float under the railroad bridge. Residents can enter the Pine Creek Rail Trail in Jersey Shore Township, about 8 miles west. This 62-mile path for hikers and cyclists runs along Pine Creek through mountains, forests and meadows. During rainy or snowy weather, locals can head inside to play a round at Harvest Moon Lanes, a locally-owned bowling alley off US-220.

Children living along or south of Route 220 usually attend Jackson Primary School for kindergarten through third grade, while students north attend Hepburn-Lycoming Primary School. The schools earn B and B-plus grades from Niche, respectively. Students from both primary schools continue to B-rated Lycoming Valley Intermediate School, B-minus-rated Williamsport Area Middle School and B-plus-rated Williamsport Area High School. Williamsport Area High School offers students the opportunity to earn college credit through dual enrollment at its Penn College Now program.

No large events in Woodward
Woodward Township doesn't have much going on. "We don't have really any community groups, and the churches don't really do events like fundraisers," Robinson says. "It's almost [as if] people have forgotten that kind of stuff. We still do have a group of church ladies who have lunch here once a month, and some of the churches have ladies' auxiliaries." Locals can attend events in nearby townships. For instance, Nippenose Township's Antes Fort Historical Days draws in thousands of people for three days of festivities in September like tractor pulls, greased pig chases for kids, historical reenactments and a corn hole tournament.
Updates to US-220 and getting around Woodward
Woodward doesn't have any public transportation and is car dependent. US-220 takes drivers 8 miles east to Williamsport or 8 miles west to Jersey Shore Township. US-220 also connects with major highways like Interstate 80 that span the state. Robinson says that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has updated US-220 to have fewer medians where cars can cross over from one side of the road to another. This helps expedite travel times for commuters going through Woodward to Williamsport, but it can make navigating within the township more cumbersome. "The limited access has made it hard for the businesses because it messed up the entrances and exits," he says. "They made it for people who go through here twice a day."
Williamsport Regional Airport has commercial flights to Dulles International and is 12 miles east. Geisinger Jersey Shore, UPMC Williamsport and UPMC Williamsport Divine Providence hospitals are all within 10 miles of Woodward. Woodward has a CAP Index crime score of 2, lower than the national average of 4.
