Locust Grove grows with new residents

The population in Locust Grove has nearly doubled in the last decade because the neighborhood offers a respite from downtown life with shops and restaurants down the historic downtown main street. “We are where the country meets the city,” says Yuantria Turner, a real estate agent with DRB Group Georgia. “It’s small-town living, but you can still commute to Atlanta. It’s the best of both worlds.” The area continues to grow as more and more new homes pop up around the neighborhood. Residents can live close to the action or find homes farther away in areas with a country feel.

Grabbing lunch at the Lovin' Oven Pizzeria

Patrons can watch the trains go by while eating out in downtown Locust Grove. Lovin’ Oven Pizzeria, located across the street from the train tracks, is a local favorite for New York-style pies and generous slices. Southern Fusion, formerly the Heaven Cafe, serves locals breakfast, lunch and Sunday brunch. In addition to locally owned eateries, coffee shops, and a yoga studio downtown, Locust Grove hosts familiar big retailers, such as Publix, Ingles and Walmart Supercenter. The Tanger Outlets shopping center always has a deal on everything from Coach purses to Nike sneakers. “The little downtown square is starting to have up-and-coming restaurants and shops,” Turner says. “The city has a traditional Southern charm and modern conveniences.”

New Craftsmans and '70s ranch homes

While Locust Grove was founded in 1893, those looking to move here will discover the bulk of homes were recently constructed. “I have been selling that area for the last five years,” Turner says. “It has grown considerably. A lot of new houses have been built to meet the need.” Locals can find homes in more rural areas away from the highways or options closer to the Tanger Outlets. Brand-new Craftsman homes in developing communities hit the market for $350,000 to $575,000. Existing ranch homes built in the ‘70s or 2020s might sell for $250,000 to $300,000 and sit surrounded by towering oak and maple trees.

Traffic jams on I-75

Without access to public buses, residents depend on their cars to visit downtown Atlanta, the Tanger Outlets or grocery stores. Traffic can be a pain when leaving the area on Interstate 75 or U.S. Route 23. Some take more scenic backroads to see the horses and fields on their commutes. The local government has a road expansion project planned to reduce traffic build-up by 2028.

Gliding across the Tussahaw Resevoir

When it comes to outdoor recreation options, Locust Grove has kids, adults and pets covered. Some play a game of tennis at Warren Holder Park while others might jog the quarter-mile track at Chase Maddox Park. When the weather warms up, locals take their kayaks and fishing rods to the Tussahaw Reservoir. The area features parking within walking distance of the boat ramp, making it easy to set sail on the water. Or parents watch their kids and pooch run wild at the playground and dog park there. “It’s a great place for families with young children. The kids still play in the streets here,” Turner says. “It has that community feel from way back when.” The CAP Index crime tracking database gives Locust Grove a 2 out of 10, with 1 indicating the lowest crime. The national average is 4.

Heading to City Hall for April fun

Locals gather at City Hall every April to join the Locust Grove Day parade and festival or visit in the evening for the street dance and fireworks show. The Locust Grove Public Library also puts on events throughout the year to give visitors of all ages something fun to do. Parents and kids might stop by for a Homeschool Social, Storytime or S.T.E.A.M. Night. Over 13 churches fill the area, giving locals a place to meet up for service or study groups.
