Quiet neighborhood 5 miles from Altoona
Just outside of historic downtown Altoona sits Greenwood. While it’s only 5 miles to the city, this neighborhood feels far removed, with early 2000s homes on large, grassy lots and its own school district. Residents are close to the scenic Canoe Creek State Park, with a lake and hiking trails that lead throughout the Allegheny Mountains. Access to grocery stores and restaurants makes this a great place for young families and established residents alike. Brenden Goldizen, real estate investor with Goldizen Real Estate LLC and Blair County resident describes the area as “beautiful, serene, and safe.”
Homes from the early 2000s
Homes in Greenwood sit on gentle, rolling hills just outside of Altoona’s city limits. It feels like the country here, closer to horse stables than corner coffee shops. The housing is different here too. Rather than the early 20th-century properties common in Altoona's core, most of Greenwood's homes were built in the mid-2000s. Ranch-style, split-level and bilevel houses are common, with Colonial Revival and Craftsman-style properties sprinkled in. Potential homebuyers can find a property amid Greenwood’s tall oak and pine trees for between $100,000 and $400,000, with the condition being the biggest factor in price variation. “There’s a lot of single-family homes,” Goldizen says. “Which, in turn, attracts a lot of individuals looking to start a family.”
Bellwood-Antis School District
Greenwood is zoned for the Bellwood-Antis School District. Students can attend Lewis M. Myers Elementary School, which receives a B grade from Niche, before Bellwood-Antis Middle School and Bellwood-Antis High School, which both get B-minus scores. Bellwood-Antis High School offers numerous College in High School courses in partnership with Saint Francis University, Penn Highlands Community College, Mount Aloysius College and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as internship opportunities to juniors and seniors. These internships are through the school district, and eligible students can work in the high school library, with the athletics department, in elementary school classrooms and in other areas.
Burgi’s Back Nine and Canoe Creek State Park
Within the neighborhood, Burgi’s Back Nine offers an affordable nine par-3 holes. Burgi’s used to have mini golf too, but it’s under repair, after a thunderstorm damaged the facility in mid-2024. Nearby Canoe Creek State Park spans 958 acres of woodlands, meadows and wetlands. Its 155-acre Canoe Lake is a popular spot to fish and has a sand beach that’s open from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. Only electrically powered boats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks are allowed on the lake. The park also has modern cabins that are available to rent and the Terry Waltz Education Center, which teaches visitors about the park’s history and wildlife. But Canoe Creek State Park is perhaps best known for its former limestone kilns. These square stone structures are a stop along the Path of Progress, a 500-mile driving tour celebrating Pennsylvania’s industrial heritage. For an evening show, visitors come from near and far to greet the flighty local residents at the Frank Felbaum Bat Sanctuary, a former church beside a graveyard. Each night, waves of carefully protected bats emerge for feeding.
Shopping and dining along E Pleasant Valley Boulevard
Local restaurants, auto parts shops, gas stations and other businesses line E Pleasant Valley Boulevard in stand-alone buildings and strip malls. Greenwood Steakhouse offers a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner option with a small-town feel. Best Way Pizza has a location in the area, and, with a drive-through, it’s a go-to spot for a quick dinner. For dessert, there’s The Meadows, where visitors walk up to the window and order their frozen custard under a vibrant, retro awning. A bit further up the road, there’s a Dollar General, a Sheetz convenience store, a Marzoni’s Italian restaurant and many other scattered businesses. Just outside the neighborhood, there’s a Martin's grocery store.
Getting around Greenwood
U.S. Interstate 99 borders Greenwood to the east and leads throughout the state. “Because of I-99, you can get anywhere in central Pennsylvania in an hour,” Goldizen says. “In the fall, it’s a beautiful drive. People will travel that road just to look at the leaves.” Amtran buses stops line E Pleasant Valley Boulevard and lead throughout the area. Locals can reach downtown Altoona in about 5 miles and Hollidaysburg in about 10 miles via Pleasant Valley Boulevard. Bellwood is about 5 miles north, using the same road. State College, home of The Pennsylvania State University, is about 40 miles northeast via I-99. “It’s an easy commute to the college if you want to see a football game,” Goldizen says. The closest airport, the Altoona-Blair County Airport, is about 25 miles south.
