Lakemont Park and People’s Natural Gas Field
Lakemont Park opened as a trolley park in 1899. Its picnic and recreation areas were the country’s first amusement parks, sitting at the end of streetcar lines in major cities. It’s one of 13 trolley parks still in operation and the eighth-oldest amusement park in the country. In addition to offering free entry, Lakemont Park is also home to the country’s oldest roller coaster, Leap The Dips. Built in 1902, the wooden ride is still operational, and though it's closed for the 2024 season, it may reopen in the future. It's visible from the outfield of Peoples Natural Gas Field, where the Altoona Curve minor league baseball team plays. “The Curve puts off fireworks three times a week,” Goldizen says. “Me and my wife sit on our back deck and can watch fireworks in the evening.” The Casino at Lakemont Park is a banquet facility where string lights drape over round tables with white tablecloths. The rustic cabin-style building with Tudor elements and a red roof hosts everything from weddings to corporate lunches to trade shows. Near these attractions is the Galactic Ice Rink, which has hockey leagues and public skate times.Quiet neighborhood without an HOA
Homes in Lakemont sit on quiet, residential streets a short drive from the neighborhood’s attractions. Mature pine and sugar maple trees line two-lane roads without sidewalks, and the Allegheny Mountains are visible in pocket vistas. Homes in various styles – from modest Cape Cods to 1990s New Traditionals – are available here. “There isn’t an HOA, but despite that, it’s a clean, tight-knit community where people keep up with what they own,” Goldizen says. Potential homebuyers can find historic early 20th-century properties that may need updates for between $100,000 and $200,000, while two-story Colonial Revival, split-level or New Traditional houses range in price from $250,000 to $350,000.Shopping at Logan Towne Center and the Logan Valley Mall
Just outside the neighborhood along U.S. Interstate 99 sits the Logan Towne Center shopping plaza. Here, residents can grocery shop at Giant Eagle Supermarket, dine out at restaurants like Panera Bread and Texas Roadhouse or stop by one of the stores that line the parking lot, like Barnes & Noble, Boscov’s, Dick's Sporting Goods and Michaels. To the west is the Logan Valley Mall and its surrounding stores. The mall is anchored by JCPenney and Macy’s, while inside, visitors can shop at stores like Old Navy and H&M. Around the mall, folks can dine at spots like Champs Sports Grill, a laid-back eatery where there are numbers on the back of high-top leather chairs and plates that look like baseballs. This spot is open late – until midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. during the weekend. Nearby, chefs at Aki Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar prepare the food in front of patrons, dishing out hibachi and other teppanyaki-grill dishes.Hollidaysburg Area School District
