Bixby Knolls has walkability and community in northern Long Beach

Farther inland from the bustling coastal communities of Long Beach, Bixby Knolls is a north side neighborhood that keeps the energy going. It’s an area known for its tree-lined streets and spacious early-1900s homes, including Spanish Revival and Craftsman architecture. After many years of revitalization, the walkable corridor of Atlantic Avenue is filled with local restaurants, breweries and boutique shops. This is also a neighborhood that takes community seriously, with signature events like First Fridays drawing crowds to the main drag every month. The price of homes is well above Long Beach’s median, but with highly rated schools, easy freeway access and a laid-back suburban feel that still keeps you close to downtown Long Beach, it's easy to see why homes here don't stay on the market long.

Early-20th century homes add architectural variety

Most homes in Bixby Knolls date back to the 1930s through the early 1950s, though many have been updated over the years. You'll find a mix of Spanish Revival homes and classic California Craftsman bungalows throughout the neighborhood. "Unlike a lot of places in Long Beach…it has custom homes, so there's a variation in architecture you won't find in a lot of other neighborhoods,” says Shannon Jones, a team lead with Keller Williams Pacific Estates, who has over two decades of experience in the area.

What to know about Bixby Knoll's high-demand housing market

The median sale price is around $1 million, higher than nearby communities like Signal Hill. Condos sell in the $400,000s and $500,000s, while homes range from $700,000s up to $2 million. "One drawback is how fast it's been appreciating," says Angie Rebennack, a Realtor with Keller Williams Pacific Estates who has sold several homes here. "There’s been up to 6% growth year over year, so people are getting priced out really fast." Allison Van Wig, a broker associate with Keller Williams Coastal Properties, adds: “Houses move pretty fast on the market, and there’s low inventory right now, so a home will sell in about two weeks. One selling for over a million takes a bit longer.”

Bixby Knolls First Fridays and more family friendly events

You’ll find plenty of ways to get outdoors and keep kids busy in Bixby Knolls. Cherry Avenue Park is often filled with softball and baseball Little Leagues, and Scherer Park is a favorite for picnicking by the duck pond. Community-focused organizations like the Expo Arts Center and the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association also plan events all year round, including:

  • First Fridays, a signature monthly street fair where Atlantic Avenue businesses stay open late, with live music, food trucks and art installations
  • Kidical Mass Bike Ride, a 4-mile family friendly bike ride through the neighborhood, ending at Pixie Toys for treats and music
  • Concerts in the Park(ing Lot), a monthly summer concert series in different parking lots around the neighborhood
  • Uptown Certified Farmers Market, a weekly market held every Thursday afternoon

Atlantic Avenue is a walkable corridor of local businesses

Atlantic Avenue is a busy main street lined with local restaurants, breweries, bakeries and more. “Bixby Knolls has undergone a real renaissance of businesses over the last 10 years or so, and residents have easy access to a variety of great shops and restaurants," Jones says. Dine out at:

  • Dutch’s BrewHouse, a community brewpub where you can brew your own craft beer and enjoy gourmet pizza
  • Thunderbolt Pizza, a New York-style pizzeria with Italian sandwiches
  • Nonna Mercato, an artisan bakery with French pastries and homemade Italian pasta
  • Rasselbock Kitchen & Beer Garden, a lively German restaurant with traditional schnitzels, pretzels and beer
  • HiroNori Craft Ramen, a Michelin-recognized ramen spot known for its house-made noodles and vegan options
According to Rebennack, you’ll want to settle close to Atlantic Avenue to get a truly walkable lifestyle. “It’s very social,” she says. “People love to live there because it's very easy to walk to the main shopping area. The corridor has an Aldi for grocery shopping, and there’s a Trader Joe’s a few blocks away.

Commute to downtown Long Beach and LA with the 710

Bixby Knolls isn’t far from Interstate 710, so residents have a direct commute to Los Angeles, 20 miles north or downtown Long Beach, just over 5 miles south. The drive to LA can take 30 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. “I would consider it very commuter-friendly,” Rebennack says. “Especially if you want a bit more of a laid-back area that’s still convenient to the freeway and convenient to the airport.” The nearby Long Beach Airport can bring some noise to the area, but Rebennack notes that “it varies block to block.”
