Waterfront community with great outdoor spaces
Commanding a prime location at the water’s edge with canals cutting through, Baldwin Harbor is known for its waterfront homes and tight-knit community. “It’s an unbelievable location, minutes to the Long Island Railroad and beaches and shopping,” says Erik Mahler, a broker at Mahler Realty. “There’s a beautiful ... park in Baldwin Harbor. There’s access to the waterfront as well, an open bay, boating and fishing.” Often considered part of nearby Baldwin, Baldwin Harbor residents are closer to the water than their Baldwin neighbors, but they’re a little farther away from shopping and dining. The difference isn’t big, though, as it’s still a mile or less to some of Baldwin’s shops.
Boating and fishing in Middle Bay, sports at Baldwin Park
With water in almost every direction, activities like boating, kayaking, swimming and fishing are an essential part of life and recreation in Baldwin Harbor. “We have great waterways if you’re a boater,” says Paul Conforti, a licensed associate broker at Douglas Elliman who has lived in Baldwin for 38 years and has sold homes here for about 20 years. The massive waterfront Baldwin Park is a focal point for residents of both Baldwin Harbor and Baldwin, who enjoy its playground, skate park, abundance of sports areas, dog run and more. “It has soccer fields, tennis fields, pickleball, baseball fields, several miles of walking trails through the woods and fields,” Mahler says. Its waterfront position also makes it a prime spot to enjoy views of the bay. Spending the day at the beach and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean is also easy, as Long Beach is only about 6 miles away and Jones Beach is about 10 miles away.

Homes with private boat slips on the canal
Between the water surrounding the neighborhood and the canals cutting through it, Baldwin Harbor has an abundance of waterfront homes. A network of well-maintained sidewalks makes it incredibly walkable, and many homes have sizeable backyards. Waterfront homes often have small private docks where homeowners can launch kayaks and dock small boats. “There’s a huge diversity of types of neighborhoods within Baldwin Harbor,” Mahler says. “You have homes built before World War II as well as homes built after World War II. There’s a distinct line." Some small communities such as Bay Colony create a very exclusive peninsula of beautiful high-end homes. "The varieties of homes are just every type of style you could imagine,” says Mahler. Hi-ranches are particularly common, as are Cape Cods and new traditionals. Tudors aren’t as common as they are in nearby Baldwin, but there are a few. Fixer-uppers can drop as low as $550,000 and inland homes usually max out at around $950,000. Waterfront homes can climb to about $2 million. The CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Dinner and live music on the water, more options in Baldwin
Sonny’s Canal House is the neighborhood’s only restaurant. "They have live bands Friday and Saturday,” says Conforti. This makes it a favorite meeting spot for drinks. When residents want more options, though, they don’t have to go far; nearby Baldwin has plenty of restaurants. Novi serves Italian classics and No Good Burger Joint has huge burgers, wings and milkshakes. Kitty O Hara’s is another popular spot for drinks and live music in a laid-back atmosphere. Baldwin also has a few major retailers like Petco and Best Buy and grocery stores, including Stop & Shop and GalaFresh Farms.

Hands-on experience at Baldwin High
The Baldwin Union Free School District, which gets an A-minus from Niche, serves as a draw for the neighborhood. Children can attend Meadow Elementary School, before moving on to Baldwin Middle School and Baldwin High School. All three schools get A-minuses. Baldwin High gives students hands-on learning experiences in specialized spaces like a courtroom and medical lab.
Highways and Baldwin LIRR station a few miles away
No highways run directly through Baldwin Harbor; Atlantic Avenue is its biggest road, and even that forms its northern border. This keeps its streets quieter and more residential, but Sunrise Highway is just over 2 miles away. Also about 2 miles away, The Long Island Rail Road’s train takes commuters to Pennsylvania Station in just 45 minutes. Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital is 3 miles away, and John F. Kennedy International Airport is 16 miles away.
