Suburban Long Island living in commuting distance to New York
Named for the region of Central Europe many of its first settlers came from, Bohemia is a residential hamlet in the South Shore Long Island town of Islip. These immigrants worked in cigar factories and farmed, a history that is commemorated at Cerny’s Bakery, a landmarked National Register of Historic Places site. Only 50 miles from New York City, many of Bohemia’s residents commute to work. “One advantage of living in this community in the middle of the island is proximity to major highways,” says Todd Yovino, a licensed agent, broker, and owner at Island Advantage Realty. “If you can reduce your daily trips into the city by 15 minutes each way, you’ll save 10 hours a month.”
There are many well manicured neighborhoods among the many in Bohemia.
Bohemia is on the south shore of Long Island approximately 50 miles from New York City.

Boring town in the middle of Long Island with nothing to do and no good bars or restaurants. Stores even close way too early at night. Needs more entertainment options.

The community here is a small, strong supportive one. In times of need the local church, schools and people come together to assist someone who has fallen on hard times. Local events have been established to help those in need and it is amazing the amount of people who come out to help, that is what a community is about.

In the area in which I live, there is somewhat of a variety of stores to choose from. Not many fast food restaurants which is good. In our area we have McDonalds, Wendys and Burger King. There are many pizza places here. There are many gas stations. Not that many mom and pop stores. There are some mom and pop stores in the town Sayville, NY which is very close. There is about a 15 minute drive to big company stores such as Target, Home Depot. There is a mall which is also about 15 to 20 minutes away. We have a CVS and Rite Aid for our pharmacies. Food stores such as Waldbaums and Best Yet are very close. If you want to drive further, we have Stop and Shop, Shop Rite and Pathmark. We have a dollar store. I can definitely get to everything I need in my area, but some stores I do have to drive longer.
